In the summer and autumn of 1990, a cetacean morbillivirus caused a massive epizootic mortality of striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba in the western Mediterranean. Previous circum- stantial evidence suggested that the disease could also have increased host susceptibility to infesta- tions with epizoic crustaceans. In this study we provide strong evidence supporting this hypothesis. Abstract The main part of cytosolic protein degradation depends on the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Proteasomes degrade their substrates into small peptide fragments, some of which are translocated into the endoplasmatic reticulum and loaded onto MHC class I molecules, which are then transported to the cell surface for inspection by CTL. A reliable prediction of proteasomal cleavages in a given protein for the identification of CTL epitopes would benefit immensely from additional cleavage data for the training of prediction algorithms. Dynamic fluctuations of dipolar semiflexible filaments

On the basis of the model of a flexible magnetic filament, the characteristics of their thermal fluctuations are considered. The crossover of the time dependence of the mean quadratic displacement from t(3/4) to t(1/2) at the magnetic field increase is found. Two characteristic mechanisms of the magnetization relaxation time distribution--straightening of the thermal undulations and excitation of the bending modes of the free ends under the action of an ac magnetic field--are described. In both cases, the characteristic scaling law omega(-3/4) of the magnetic susceptibility in a high-frequency range is found.

Magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic shielding at the nuclei of bis-heteropentalenes formed by two furan units ([2,3-b], [3,2-b], [3,4-b], and [3,4-c] isomers) have been computed by several approximated techniques and a large Gaussian basis set to achieve near Hartree–Fock estimates. Ab initio models of the ring currents induced by a magnetic field normal to the molecular plane were obtained for the three isomeric systems of higher symmetry, showing that the π electrons give rise to intense diamagnetic circulation. A magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) study has been performed on electrodeposited thin films of the Prussian blue analogue Fe3[Cr(CN)6]2·15H2O (1). This study reveals the onset of hysteretic magnetic signals at temperatures above 60 K, in contrast with magnetic susceptibility measurements which indicate a Curie temperature of 23 K for this ferromagnetic film. The origin of this discrepancy is due to the presence of amorphous iron oxide particles that accumulate in the surface of the material. This report illustrates the potential of MOKE magnetometry for the detection of surface chemical impurities that remain elusive using bulk magnetic techniques.

Abstract The adsorption of dissolved Prussian Blue derivatives along a positively charged monolayer leads to new Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films presenting a ferromagnetic state at low temperature. Such organic/inorganic systems containing inorganic sheets between organic amphiphilic layers constitute a new series of magnetic lamellar materials.
