Preparation, scaling behavior of activation energy, Hall effect, and flux-flow anisotropy of (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2O6+δHTS thin films

Abstract We have prepared fully textured (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2O6+δ (HgRe-1212) thin films by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and post-annealing. The films exhibit sharp superconducting transitions at Tc=124 K with transition width ΔTc≃2 K. Conditions for reproducible film preparation have been found. The resistive transitions have been investigated in magnetic fields up to 8 T (parallel to the c-axis) and 10 T (perpendicular to the c-axis). We have determined the activation energy of thermally activated flux-motion for both magnetic field orientations. Preparation and x-ray pole-figure characterization of DC-sputtered Bi-2201, Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 thin films

Thin films of the three members of the superconducting series , n = 1,2,3, were prepared by diode sputtering. X-ray characterization shows that all the films are single phase and c-axis oriented and in addition they are epitaxially grown. The latter is found by x-ray pole-figure measurements taken with a four-circle diffractometer. These are emphasized in this work. AC susceptibility measurements show that, while the 2201 films are not superconducting until 4 K, the transition temperatures of the 2212 films are 82 K - 90 K and of the 2223 films 84 K - 89 K.

A superconductor is a material that can conduct electricity without resistance below a superconducting transition temperature, Tc. The highest Tc that has been achieved to date is in the copper oxide system: 133 kelvin at ambient pressure and 164 kelvin at high pressures. As the nature of superconductivity in these materials is still not fully understood (they are not conventional superconductors), the prospects for achieving still higher transition temperatures by this route are not clear. Magnetoresistance in the HF Metal at Zero Temperature

In this chapter we consider the paradoxical behavior of the residual resistivity \(\rho _0\) of HF metals in magnetic fields and under pressure. Our consideration is based on the idea of flattening of the single-particle spectrum \(\varepsilon (\mathbf{p})\) that profoundly effects on the specific heat \(C\), thermal expansion coefficient \(\alpha \) and magnetic susceptibility \(\chi \) in the normal state, the jump of \(C\) at the point of superconducting phase transition etc. We show that FC associated with flat bands contributes to the residual resistivity \(\rho _0\), while the application of the magnetic field or pressure to the system with a flat band removes the flat band and leads …
Ag/(Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting tape processing: Solid state chemistry aspects

Abstract Different preparation methods have been used to obtain starting powders used in the fabrication of composite tapes by the powder-in-tube method. The effect of these distinct starting powders on the superconducting properties of Ag/Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O monofilament tapes has been investigated. The changes in the physical properties, including the critical current density at 77 K and ac magnetic susceptibility, and microstructure, using optical and electronic microscopy, have been analyzed in relation to the solid state reactions involved in the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ phase transformations.
Susceptibility to collagen-induced arthritis is modulated by TGFβ responsiveness of T cells

The objective of our study was to determine the regulatory effects that endogenous transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) exerts on T cells in the pathogenesis of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). CIA was induced in transgenic mice expressing a dominant negative TGFbeta type II receptor in T cells under the control of the human CD2 promoter. Clinical and histological arthritis scores were determined and experiments on disease induction and the healing phase of disease were performed. Abstract Although IL-12 and IL-23 share the common p40 subunit, IL-23, rather than IL-12, seems to drive the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and arthritis, because IL-23/p19 knockout mice are protected from disease. In contrast, we describe in this study that newly created LacZ knockin mice deficient for IL-23 p19 were highly susceptible for the development of experimental T cell-mediated TNBS colitis and showed even more severe colitis than wild-type mice by endoscopic and histologic criteria. Subsequent studies revealed that dendritic cells from p19-deficient mice produce elevated levels of IL-12, and that IL-23 down-regulates IL-12 expression upon TLR ligation. …
Counter-propagating frequency mixing with Terahertz waves in diamond

Frequency conversion by means of Kerr nonlinearity is one of the most common and exploited nonlinear optical processes in the UV, visible, IR, and mid-IR spectral regions. Here we show that wave mixing of an optical field and a terahertz wave can be achieved in diamond, resulting in the frequency conversion of the terahertz radiation either by sum- or difference-frequency generation. In the latter case, we show that this process is phase matched and most efficient in a counterpropagating geometry.
Multiple independent variants at the TERT locus are associated with telomere length and risks of breast and ovarian cancer

Journal article TERT-locus SNPs and leukocyte telomere measures are reportedly associated with risks of multiple cancers. Using the Illumina custom genotyping array iCOGs, we analyzed ~480 SNPs at the TERT locus in breast (n = 103,991), ovarian (n = 39,774) and BRCA1 mutation carrier (n = 11,705) cancer cases and controls. Leukocyte telomere measurements were also available for 53,724 participants. Most associations cluster into three independent peaks.
