Psychosocial Intervention: A Jornada de uma Revista Rumo a Qualidade Científica, Visibilidade e Internacionalização

2015

AbstractThis paper describes the journey that the journal Psychosocial Intervention began in 2011, with the aim of increasing its scientific quality and broadening its reach. Founded in 1992, Psychosocial Intervention began a new phase in 2011, with the advent of a new Editor-in-Chief, editorial team, and editorial policy. At that point, strategic decisions were made in the areas of editorial and review practices, language, and dissemination of the journal, which resulted in a publication of higher quality and broader reach. The description of the journey undertaken by Psychosocial Intervention is presented with the hope that this experience may be useful to scholars, scientific organizatio…

Vocational teachers’ pathways in the course of a curriculum reform

2011

Teachers face continuous changes, many of which significantly influence their professional identities and work practices. This study investigates Finnish vocational teachers’ pathways in the course of a curriculum reform. The data were obtained by interviewing 14 vocational teachers twice, i.e. at the initial and later stages of the reform. This study used a narrative approach to analyse the interviews as whole and also to illustrate variations between teachers. The teachers were found to exhibit distinctive pathways through the reform: an empowerment pathway, a critical but adaptive pathway, an open and expectant pathway, a successful transformation pathway, and a struggling pathway. The p…

Revisiting the didactic triangle: from the particular to the general

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.springerlink.com/content/61p78l089tnx8rn5/ The basic notion of a didactic triangle is explained with historical annotations on its origins and subsequent theorization in the literature. Instances of its application to classroom environments to demonstrate its representational capabilities are presented. Generalizations of the triangle are proposed that integrate the role of technology, the researcher in mathematics teaching developmental research, and mediating complexes in the student–teacher–content interfaces. Further, the use of the didactic triangle as a heuristic device is also discus…

First German Guideline on Diagnostics and Therapy of Clinically Non-Functioning Pituitary Tumors

2021

AbstractAlthough non-functioning pituitary tumors are frequent, diagnostic and therapeutic concepts are not well standardized. We here present the first German multidisciplinary guideline on this topic. The single most important message is to manage the patients by a multidisciplinary team (consisting at least of an endocrinologist, a neurosurgeon, and a (neuro-) radiologist). The initial diagnostic work-up comprises a detailed characterization of both biochemical (focusing on hormonal excess or deficiency states) and morphological aspects (with magnetic resonance imaging of the sellar region). An ophthalmological examination is only needed in presence of symptoms or large tumors affecting …

<p>A randomized multicenter study comparing seawater washes and carmellose artificial tears eyedrops in the treatment of dry eye syndrome</p…

2019

Purpose To investigate the safety and efficacy of sterile isotonic seawater washes vs standard treatment with carmellose artificial tears in dry eye syndrome (DES). Patients and methods This is a randomized multicenter prospective study with 12 weeks of follow-up. A group of patients with DES (N=60) were treated with seawater spray (Quinton®) five times daily, and another similar group (N=60) were treated with carmellose artificial tears eyedrops (Viscofresh® 0.5%) five times a day. The parameters studied and measured were as follows: Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire score, Schirmer I test (without anesthesia) score, tear osmolarity (TearLab®), tear breakup time, tear meniscus hei…

Role of comprehensive geriatric assessment in the management of osteoporotic hip fracture in the elderly: an overview

2013

Purpose: To highlight the advantages of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) over usual care in the management of elderly patients with fragility hip fractures in terms of reducing the related mortality and disability. Method: An overview of publications on the topic was conducted using the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. Results: Several models of geriatric and orthopedic comanagement have been developed in recent years, all characterized by a variable degree of integration, and they have been shown to reduce complications, disability and mortality in elderly hip-fracture patients. Preoperatively, CGA should identify the comorbidities that need to be treated in view of surgery, so as to …

Coffee and tea breaks for liver health

2017

Let food be your medicine (Hippocrates, 400 B. C.) The quality of diet, calorie intake and physical activity/sedentari-ness are pivotal drivers in the interplay between health and non-communicable diseases, and the battle against the risks associ-ated with Western-type behaviour is the top priority of medical societies and health institutions. Unfortunately, any attempt at adopting a healthy lifestyle is counteracted by unhealthy environmental pressure, which favours the diseases of affluence, including liver diseases. The typical Mediterranean diet, characterized by the consumption of complex carbohydrates, fibre-and antioxidant-rich vegetables, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, is considered…

Clinical Simulation in pediatrics and neonatology using EDISON: an educational innovation project

2021

Introduction: Clinical simulation is a tool that allows creating controlled and safe spaces that mimic reality, where students can acquire skills and abilities prior to facing real situations. Methodology: This is a study with two phases. The first quasi-experimental phase where 3 questionnaires were used; two of them to assess knowledge (pretest - posttest) and the other one to assess the satisfaction of the training action. And the second phase was analytical, where the effectiveness of a training intervention in a confinement context based on the use of audiovisual materials created through EDISON was evaluated. Results: In 2019 the average satisfaction of the students was 9.22 (SD 0.72)…

A sequence of flaps and dissection exercises in the living model to improve the learning curve for perforator flap surgery.

2020

Abstract Introduction The training to learn how to perform perforator flaps requires practice on a living model to optimize dissection and to evaluate outcome. The purpose of this study was to describe a training model that optimizes the use of animals in order to perform the maximum number of exercises per animal. Material and methods The sequence has been planned and practiced by the first and last author, recorded perfected and implemented in a two-day surgical course. The sequence was then evaluated by the trainers and the trainees by means of a questionnaire. Results All students were able to complete the sequence of exercises before the end of the second day except two (8/10) who coul…

The 2016 European Thyroid Association/European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy Guidelines for the Management of Graves' Orbitopathy

2015

Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is the main extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease, though severe forms are rare. Management of GO is often suboptimal, largely because available treatments do not target pathogenic mech anisms of the disease. Treatment should rely on a thorough assessment of the activity and severity of GO and its impact on the patient's quality of life. Local measures (artificial tears, ointments and dark glasses) and control of risk factors for progression (smoking and thyroid dysfunction) are recommended for all patients. In mild GO, a watchful strategy is usually sufficient, but a 6-month course of selenium supplementation is effective in improving mild manifestations …
