Teacher-child interactions as a context for developing social competence in toddler classrooms
2022
The present study investigates the quality and variability of teacher-child interactions in relation to children’s social competence in Finnish toddler classrooms. The participants included 242 toddlers (114 girls, 128 boys) and their teachers (N= 42). The quality of teacher-child interactions (i.e., emotional and behavioral support; engaged support for learning) was observed using the CLASS-Toddler observation instrument (La Paro et al., 2012), and the average amount of within-day variability was calculated from the observed cycles. Teachers rated toddler’s social competence with the Multisource Assessment of Social Competence Scale (MASCS; Junttila et al., 2006) in relation to the toddler…

Raising the Profile of Sign Language Teachers in Finland
2016
Sign language teaching in Finland has a long history. In contrast, sign language teacher training programs and research into the sign languages of Finland both know a short history. Due to this contrast, the field of sign language teaching nowadays can be seen as the ‘Wild West’. Till today, teachers from different backgrounds do teach sign language. We do not have a clear picture of what knowledge or competencies are expected from these teachers. In this article we would like to share our opinions about what the profile of a sign language teacher could look like in order to raise and advance the discussion and improve the quality of sign language teaching in Finland. nonPeerReviewed
”Unelmieni oppitunti” englannin kielen opettajakoulutettavien visualisoimana
2017
This study views the motivation of future teachers from quite a novel perspective: in terms of vision or envisioning. The study was carried out with student teachers of English (n=31) enrolled on a MA degree programme at a university in Finland. They were asked to envision an English class of their dreams after graduating as qualified teachers. The students produced a picture and were asked to comment on it briefly and provide some further details concerning the class. The task was carried out as part of one of the first professionally oriented courses in the students’ university studies. The pictures complemented with commentaries, or pools of multimodal data, were subjected to qualitative…

This small-scale study of vocational teacher’s vocational didactics aims to investigate boundary learning at the VET Programme for Sales and Service at the Norwegian upper secondary level. The research question explored is: How can vocational teachers improve boundary learning for students in work-based placements in the subject vocational in-depth study (YFF)? The methodological approach is qualitative interviews with vocat…

Opettajien tunteita on tutkittu yhä enemmän muutaman kuluneen vuosikymmenen aikana.
