THE GEOMETRY THROUGH THE BODY: DOING, ACTING, THINKING
2016
The geometry has been for more than two millennia one of the most important fields of knowledge of mathematics, identifying with it for a long time. In education, the relationship between the geometry and the physical world has always been considered one of the main elements for the acquisition of specific skills and competences. In the teaching-learning processes the thinking and the interconnection between doing, acting, thinking is therefore crucial. Teaching through the body may prove effective for teaching mathematics which, very often, is hard to be learned because of difficulties that the child encounters in assimilating mathematical symbolism and, after, applying it to real life and…
MANIPULATION OF OBJECTS AS INTEGRATION ACTIVITY
2016
The visual disability assumes, in the processes of teaching and learning, a particular connotation for the specificity that over the years the vision in the overall structure of knowledge has had. The whole western tradition on the knowledge stood on a "oculocentric" vision of knowledge. The view has always been considered the “sense for excellence". An educational activity, therefore, that emphasizes and promotes strategies of inclusion / integration of students with visual impairment is significant and essential to the whole class group. We present here an experimentation with primary school children: in a closed bag, there are objects of everyday life: every time a child extracts an obje…

Factors Constraining Teachers’ Wellbeing and Agency in a Finnish University : Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic
2022
The COVID-19 pandemic forced teachers to undergo a sudden shift toward technology-enhanced teaching and learning, challenging their capacities for change in many ways. This study explores those factors constraining teachers’ wellbeing and agency that influenced their capacities as teachers in a Finnish university during the first year of the pandemic. Two sets of data were collected, with an online survey in the spring (n = 297) and autumn (n = 246) of 2020. At both times, challenges with workload, time management, and interactions with colleagues were found to be the most constraining factors. Difficulties with work–life balance and home office facilities seemed more of an issue in the spr…
”Tämä ulkopoliittinen linja saattoi olla ratkaiseva niitti” : Historiallinen perusteleminen lukiolaisten teksteissä
2019
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan lukiolaisten historiallista päättelyä tutkivan historian oppimisen viikolla tuotettujen tekstien kautta. Viikon aikana opiskelijat selvittivät ratkaisematonta historiallista tapahtumaa juhannukselta 1957.
What is important in history teaching? Student class teachers’ conceptions
2020
In Finland, history is taught in comprehensive schools at both primary and secondary levels. In primary schools, teachers are qualified class teachers who study one or two history courses during their teacher education. The amount of history taught in teacher education is limited, but student class teachers have studied history while at comprehensive school and general upper secondary school, and they have lived experience of historical cultures as members of different groups and communities. Thus, they have conceptions of what history teaching in school is, and what it should be. In this article, student class teachers’ conceptions of teaching history were examined using data (n=92) consi…
Teaching historical thinking in practice : a study of US history teachers’ views on using primary sources in AP and IB history lessons
2022
Analysis of primary sources has been recognised to have a significant impact on the development of students’ historical thinking. This study explored US history teachers’ attitudes and practices to using primary sources by interviewing six history teachers and observing 29 history lessons between August and November 2016 in Indiana and California. The main focus of the study was on the views of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Advancement Placement (AP) history teachers. Results indicated that all teachers valued the use of primary sources and most of them used sources frequently. Notable was the deficiency of source evaluation in AP and Regular history lessons in thos…
Historical literacy and contradictory evidence in Finnish high school setting : The Bronzen Soldier of Tallinn
2016
This article revolves around three key issues. First, over the last 30 years, the traditional approach to history teaching as memorization of facts and chains of events has been changing. Currently, the Finnish national core curriculum fixes the focus of history teaching on students’ critical and historical thinking skills. However, the curriculum leaves a lot of maneuvering scope for schools and individual teachers, but teachers seemingly still emphasize content over skills with too little focus on historical thinking skills. Second, Finland has so far been lacking in research on students’ historical thinking skills, even if they have been adopted as an important part of the curriculum. Wh…
LE COMPETENZE DELL’INSEGNANTE DI STORIA NELLA SCUOLA PRIMARIA TRA PASSATO, PRESENTE E FUTURO
2022
What’s the name of the game? : Historiallinen empatia ja pelillisyys historian opetuksessa
2019
Historian opetuksen yhteydessä on viimeisten kahden vuosikymmenen aikana puhuttu erityisesti opetuksen suuntaamisesta sisältöjen opettamisesta historian taitojen ja demokraattisena kansalaisena toimimisen suuntaan. Tavoitteet edellyttävät myös käytäntöjen muuttumista. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan lukion historian opetusta opetuskokeilun kautta. Kokeilussa hyödynnettiin pelillisyyttä sekä historiallista empatiaa. Kahdeksan tuntia kestäneen pelin aikana opiskelijoiden tehtävänä oli konstruoida tietoa vuonna 1957 tapahtuneesta ampumavälikohtauksesta presidentin kesäasunnolla Kultarannassa. Aineisto kerättiin opetuskokeilun yhteydessä (N = 30 lukiolaista) kyselylomakkeen ja haastattelun avu…
