Pre-service and in-service teachers' experiences of inquiry-based primary science teaching : A collaborative team teaching model
2019
This research clarifies how a collaborative team teaching model (CTTM) can support both pre-service and in-service teachers’ professional development in using inquiry-based science teaching in primary schools. The data were collected via a questionnaire-based survey approach after inquiry projects implementation at public schools in four Finnish cities. In total, 98 pre-service teachers and 51 inservice class teachers were involved in the research. According to their experiences collaborative team teaching was seen as an adequate teaching approach in primary school science lessons. Both in-service and pre-service teachers experienced inquirybased science teaching enthusiastically and receiv…
Differences in teacher telling according to students' age
2022
Teacher telling can support but also hinder learning. In inquiry activities, telling that removes productive struggle may be problematic. In this study, different aged students experimented in a digital learning environment to build rules for a balance beam. We examined how the amount of teacher telling vary according to students’ age and the sophistication level of the rule. We collected video data from 21 pre-service teachers when each of them guided eight, 10, and 12 year old students. We found that the amount of teacher telling generally was not related to students’ age. However, when considering teacher guidance for more sophisticated rules, teacher telling was related to students’ age…
Reflections on dialogicity : Challenges and suggestions by mathematics student teachers
2021
Research related to dialogic teaching has been gaining ground in recent decades. On a theoretical level, researchers have described how sociocultural approaches are linked to dialogic teaching. In addition, empirical studies have explained how dialogic teaching manifests itself in educational dialogue and classroom interactions. However, studies addressing how the dialogic theory and practice could be linked meaningfully in teacher education and professional development programs in subject teacher education and related praxis are still limited. Especially in the case of math teacher education, the reported professional development programs are limited in number. Whereas the tendency has bee…
Teacher Guidance in Mathematical Problem-Solving Lessons : Insights from Two Professional Development Programs
2019
When implementing a problem-solving lesson, the teacher needs to provide students appropriate guidance during problem solving. This demanding task requires understanding students’ work in progress and giving them necessary help without constraining their thinking. In this article, we share insights from two professional development programs on how teachers guided students’ problem solving and how they reflected on these instances. One of the programs included Finnish pre-service teachers, while the other program included US in-service teachers. We analyzed video-recorded problem-solving lessons from 16 Finnish and 2 US teachers in grades 6–9. We found two themes about teacher guidance of st…
Les ouvrages de mathématiques dans l'histoire
2013
"Media are your windows to the world" : teachers' perspectives on the use of media and ICT in foreign language teaching
2016
Eri medioita on käytetty opetuksessa jo vuosikymmeniä. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää kuinka usein opettajat käyttävät eri medioita opetuksessaan ja vapaa-ajallaan, kuinka pedagogisesti hyödyllisiksi he kokevat eri mediatyypit ja kuinka hyvin he osaavat niitä itse käyttää opetuksessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on lisäksi saada tietoa siitä, mitkä ovat opettajien mielestä suurimmat hyödyt ja haasteet median opetuskäytössä ja siitä, minkälaista lisäkoulutusta medioiden käyt…
Advances of Research in Education and ICT in Hospital Classrooms
2017
1996
Most recently we have assisted to a considerable increase of investigations on cons tructivi Stic approaches to Science teaching, but among all these works we rarely found detailed proposals for including the History and Philosophy of Science. In this paper we consider how to initiate this trend and which should be the aims in order to get a better Science teaching. We consider basically which the pupils’ perceptions of Science in a High School level are in order to show how we can modify them by means of introducing the History of Science under a new perspective.
Creating Learning Environments Free of Violence in Special Education through the Dialogic Model of Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts
2021
Violence suffered by children is a violation of human rights and a global health problem. Children with disabilities are especially vulnerable to violence in the school environment, which has a negative impact on their well-being and health. Students with disabilities educated in special schools have, in addition, more reduced experiences of interaction that may reduce both their opportunities for learning and for building protective social networks of support. This study analyses the transference of evidence-based actions to prevent violence in schools –the Dialogic Model of Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts (DMPRC)– in the context of a special school, and its impact on the reduction …
Revisiting the didactic triangle: from the particular to the general
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.springerlink.com/content/61p78l089tnx8rn5/ The basic notion of a didactic triangle is explained with historical annotations on its origins and subsequent theorization in the literature. Instances of its application to classroom environments to demonstrate its representational capabilities are presented. Generalizations of the triangle are proposed that integrate the role of technology, the researcher in mathematics teaching developmental research, and mediating complexes in the student–teacher–content interfaces. Further, the use of the didactic triangle as a heuristic device is also discus…
