To feed back or to feed forward? : Students' experiences of and responses to feedback in a Finnish EFL classroom
2017
Good feedback is a powerful element in learning. Ultimately, however, the impact feedback has on learning depends on how the learner responds to that feedback. So far, foreign or second language studies on feedback have mainly concentrated on different methods of error correction, not on students’ responses to feedback in general. This study aims to find out what students thought of the feedback they had received in their EFL studies. Furthermore, the study seeks to discover students’ different responses to that feedback. The data was gathered using a web-based questionnaire filled out by 140 students. The students, aged 17–19, were all from a single Finnish upper secondary school. The data…
La «pedagogia» di papa Francesco
2018
The pedagogical teachings of Pope Francis in his first four years of pontificate are presented in this article: the purpose of education, the methodology of educatio…
Kielitietoinen aineenopetus opettajankoulutuksessa
2016
This article discusses language sensitive teacher education across the curriculum. First, we briefly discuss the importance of language sensitive teaching and take a look at studies on linguistically responsive teaching and teacher education. The results of the empirical part are based on data from a questionnaire and an applied task in which student subject teachers (n=221) assessed second language learners’ writing skills and challenges of studying specific school subjects from learner’s proficiency perspective. We also report tentative results on the negotiation of language in a teaching intervention which integrates language and content. Our findings indicate that the student teachers a…
Creating a National Digital Learning Environment for Enhancing University Teachers' Pedagogical Expertise - The Case UNIPS
2019
This article analyses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a nation-wide project to create a common digital solution for university teaching staff’s pedagogical training in Finland. During three years, eight universities collaborated in developing an online learning platform called UNIPS, the University Pedagogical Support system. The areas to develop were A) a learning platform based on technical design principles, B) pedagogical principles, and C) broadening the scope of offered studies. The results have been promising. With a carefully planned timetable, all participating universities were able to produce, test, and offer UNIPS modules in collaboration with other universities on…
Exploring coherence and authorship in pedagogical link-making in science
2021
Despite rapid changes in education, science classrooms will remain central forums where fragmented pieces of information are brought together to construct coherent knowledge as concepts and explanatory scientific storylines. There is limited work stressing the importance of the interplay between how content is communicated through pedagogical link-making and the use of communicative approaches. Even less research addresses the role of coherence in this process. In this study, through exploring three cases of teachers teaching the same topic, we will bring forth differences on how links between past and to be learned scientific knowledge are made. We look at how authorship – whether teacher …
Overview of development lines of music teaching methods in Finland
2020
This article provides a cross-sectional overview of the evolution of music teaching methods over a 160-year timeline. The objective of the study is limited to examining the mainstream trends in the development of methods, or their manifestations, as well as discussing the causes behind them. The objective is also to investigate the methodical state of the 21st century teaching. The data consists of previous studies, music textbooks and learning diaries of class teacher students (N=79). The analysis of the data is based on analytic-historical and data-driven content analysis. The time period from 1860 to1970 has focused on developing the methods. The participatory and functional methods have…
Patterns of university teachers’ approaches to teaching, professional development and perceived departmental cultures
2019
Many studies have been conducted about academics’ approaches to teaching, professional development and perceived departmental culture, but their interconnectedness has been considered to a lesser extent. The research presented here examined these patterns comparatively by disciplinary fields and years of teaching experience. Three inventories were filled in by 1141 academics from one Finnish and two Hungarian universities. Based on a hierarchical cluster analysis, four patterns emerged: (1) Experimenters with diverse teaching approaches; (2) Experimenters perceiving their department’s culture as most supportive and collaborative; (3) Individualistic knowledge-focused teachers; and (4) Stude…
Language choice in EFL teaching : student teachers' perceptions
2012
The balancing act of teaching : a comparison between EFL teachers' views and a textbook analysis of the role of perceptual learning styles in Finnish…
2012
Grammar teaching methods in an EFL lesson
2013
