DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF EPOXY RESIN COMPOSITES FILLED WITH NANOCARBON INCLUSIONS
2013
The epoxy resin composites with various carbon additives were investigated in the frequency range of 20 Hz - 3 GHz at temperatures from room to 500 K. The dielectric properties were found to be strongly impacted by percolation threshold. The lowest percolation threshold (< 0.25 wt.%), was observed in composites with single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Nanostructures materials for protection and consolidation of ancient structures
2014
The preservation and appreciation of the built cultural heritage is of particular interest, through researches and studies on innovative technologies. As evidenced by the good results obtained in some interventions both at national and international level, activities for the conservation of cultural heritage must be the result of synergies and collaboration of interdisciplinary groups, science and knowledge: architecture, engineering, technology, sociology, economics, urban planning, legislation must be managed and planned to work together. The theme of protection and consolidation of ancient structures, applying non-traditional technologies, requires a comprehensive overview of strategies …
Hybrid aerosol assisted atmospheric pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition: a facile route toward nano-composite thin films?
2009
A hybrid chemical vapour deposition strategy is presented as a facile route for the production of vanadium dioxide nano-composite thin films. The effect of the inclusion of gold nano-particles and the use of a surfactant molecule; tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB), is discussed. The films are fully characterised and it is shown that micro-structural changes lead to an enhancement of thermochromic properties, whilst gold nano-particles lead to a change in the films optical properties. Optical data is used in energy modelling studies to elucidate the films potential as an energy saving coating in architectural glazing.
Nanotechnology in restoration: cleaning and consolidation of stonework
2011
Nanotechnology is a science that utilises methods and techniques to manipulate material on a size-scale smaller than a micrometre (normally between 1 and 100 nanometres) and has the aim of producing materials with particular chemical-physical characteristics. It constitutes a true multi-disciplinary sphere of investigation, involving numerous areas of research, ranging from molecular biology to chemistry, from the science of materials to (applied and basic) physics, to mechanical and electronic engineering. Nanotechnology’s present and future applications render this an issue of great current interest, bearing in mind not only its innovative character, but also its possible impact on indust…

Le nanotecnologie per l'architettura
2013
As a new way of approaching the utilization of the resources of this planet earth, the Author proposes baked earth as a natural, ecological and widely available building material, accessible everywhere and to everybody; starting from the Manifesto for the Right to Build with Baked Earth, the Author cites several examples of contemporary architecture built from this material.

Nanotecnology in restoration: cleaning and consolidation of stonework
2012
This paper describes a project using nanotechnology to improve the characteristics of reliability, compatibility and resistance over a period of time, of products for the restoration and conservation of structures of historic-artistic value, through experimentation with nano-structured materials. The research project specifically tackles two issues, with regard to cleaning and consolidation, testing the new products on samples of stone material taken from the archaeological site at Morgantina (in the centre of Sicily).
