Growth pattern of underlithified strata during thrust-related folding

2004

Abstract Asymmetric anticlines with overturned or steeply dipping forelimbs and gently dipping backlimbs are generally interpreted as thrust-related folds. Fold asymmetry occurs as a consequence of forelimb rotation. If deformation takes place in environments dominated by submarine sedimentation, the limbs coincide with the slope (depositional surface) and rotation reflects slope steepening. If folds are nucleated in poorly or unlithified deposits, growth geometry also depends on the properties of the media, such as cohesion and the angle of internal friction. For cohesionless deposits, the tilting of the slope influences the equilibrium of the soft sediments, resulting in gravity-driven fl…

NEOTECTONIC ACTIVITY AND EMISSION OF FLUIDS IN THE NORTHWEST SICILY CHANNEL

The southern Sicilian coast represents an important contribution to Italian tourism, the Sicily Channel is an important communication path because at the top of its seafloor there are many pipelines, and submarine communication cables which are laid to carry signals, and which are very important to the minor islands. In this work, we are presenting results of the detailed geomorphological and seismostratigraphic analysis based on new very high-resolution dataset (multibeam and CHIRP) acquired during the ACUSCAL 2015 Cruise. We also used low resolution bathymetric and seismic data provided from online database (ViDEPI, GEBCO, EMODnet). This study allows us to reconstruct the tectonic volcani…

The Brolo Island, a lentil in the “Ocean”

2010

The north-eastern Sicily coast reflects the effects of Holocene active tectonics associated to subduction system of Ionian crust beneath the Calabrian arc (CAPUTO et alii, 1970; WESTAWAY, 1993, DOGLIONI et alii, 1999). The latter, characterized by a stack of crystalline rock and its sedimentary cover, is the highest structural element in the Sicily chain. The Calabrian arc is a region that records one of the major Quaternary vertical tectonic movement in the whole Mediterranean basin. This uplift, well documented from Last Interglacial, is expressed as vertical variation of the height of the Quaternary marine terraces inner margin that characterize the north-eastern Sicily coast. The uplift…

Mesozoic tectonics and volcanism from Tethyan rifted continental margins in western Sicily

2009

Tectonic and volcanic features from the Jurassic-Cretaceous carbonate successions of Rocca Busambra, Balatelle Mount and Vicari-Roccapalumba (central-western Sicily), are here described. These areas represent the easternmost outcrops of the Trapanese domain in Sicily. The Trapanese succession consists of shallow to deep-water Meso-Cenozoic deposits formed in a carbonate platform to pelagic plateau depositional setting. Detailed field work and structural analysis detected indicate the occurrence of paleofaults with different orientation, unconformity surfaces, lateral facies changes, resedimented materials and volcanic products (pillow lavas and tuffitic deposits). These data combined with f…

Carte marine e rischi geologici

2008

The investigations carried out by the "Gruppo di Geologia Marina" of the Palermo University in the framework of the CARG project, have been focused on the marine sectors between the Egadi Islands offshore and the Cefalù Basin (NW Sicilian offshore). The research activities have yielded new results on the following fields: (i) sedimentation and coastal dynamics, (ii) sea bottom cartography and mapping of submerged structures, (iii) morpho-bathymetry and geological risk assessment

Syn-sedimentary tectonics during early Pliocene time in the northern Madonie Mountains (Sicily

2008

PRIN Project 2010-11 “Active and recent geodynamics of Calabrian Arc and accretionary complex in the Ionian Sea”: new constraints from geological, ge…

2014

This contribution illustrates the preliminary results of our Research Unit in the PRIN Project 2010-11, which focuses on active and recent geodynamics of Calabrian Arc. The integration of the new geological, geodetic and seismological data supports the inferred recent plate boundary reorganization in the central-southern Mediterranean, where the regional GNNS velocity fields point to a deceleration or cessation of Calabrian Arc migration, and to extension along the axis of the Calabrian Arc, accommodated by normal faulting (e.g. Capo Vaticano and Messina Straits (Aloisi et al., 2012; Pepe et al., 2014; Spampinato et al., 2014). The study of the lateral borders of the Arc revealed that obliq…

From land to sea: multi-scale and multi-resolution analysis of active deformation and seismogenic sources around the coasts of Southern Italy

2016

During the last decade, we have blended our individual skills to form a research group devoted to investigating active crustal deformation in areas adjacent to the coast of Southern Italy, with the aim to bridge the gap between the onshore and offshore realms. Our research is based on a multi-scale and multi-resolution approach that includes high-resolution seismics, coastal morpho-tectonics and structural geology, complemented by seismicity, Global Positioning System and InSAR. Need and opportunities of such an endeavor arise from the basic observation that, although most population centers lie close to the coastal areas, very little is known about active structures at the sea. However, hi…

Architecture and Pliocene to Recent evolution of the offshore prolongation of the Granitola - Castelvetrano Thrust System (Sicily Channel)

2014

High-resolution, seismic profiles were recorded in the offshore of Mazara - Punta Granitola with the purpose of reconstructing the architecture and Pliocene to Recent evolution of the south-west prolongation of the Granitola- Castelvetrano Thrust System, identified as an active structure possibly related to destructive historical earthquakes (Barreca et al., 2014; Ferranti et al., this meeting). A number of seismic units were identified. The oldest one is interpreted as representative of the Lower Pliocene pelagic deposits known in the region as Trubi. Lower-middle Pleistocene calcarenites are widespread along the continental shelf (CS) between Mazara del Vallo while their top rapidly deepe…

Geomorphological and Morphometric Analyses of the Catanzaro Trough (Central Calabrian Arc, Southern Italy): Seismotectonic Implications

2022

In this work, we investigated the landscape response to the recent activity of the faults affecting the Catanzaro Trough, a seismically active structural basin that developed transversally to the Calabrian Arc (Southern Italy) during the Neogene–Quaternary. We carried out a geomorphological and morphometric study of the drainage networks and basins intercepted by the Quaternary faults that were previously mapped through remote and field analyses. The study confirms the occurrence north of the Catanzaro Trough of a WNW–ESE-oriented left-lateral strike-slip fault system (here named the South Sila Piccola Fault System), which accommodates the differential SE-ward migration of the u…
