Combination of omalizumab and specific immunotherapy is superior to immunotherapy in patients with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and co-morbi…
2008
Summary Background The treatment of allergic asthma by specific immunotherapy (SIT) is hampered by potential side-effects. Objective The aim of this study was to study the effect of omalizumab, a monoclonal anti-IgE antibody, in combination with SIT in patients with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (SAR) and co-morbid seasonal allergic asthma (SAA) incompletely controlled by conventional pharmacotherapy. Methods A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre trial was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of omalizumab (Xolair®) vs. placebo in combination with depigmented SIT (Depigoid®) during the grass pollen season. Omalizumab or placebo was started 2 weeks befor…
Brain Injured Patients versus Multiple Trauma Patients: Some Neurobehavioral and Psychopathological Aspects
2006
BACKGROUND: The study aims to describe the neurobehavioral and psychopathological disorders in road crash victims with cerebral lesions compared with multiple trauma sufferers with no brain damage. METHODS: This study compares the neuropsychological and psychopathological developments of two groups of road crash victims (25 severe brain injuries (SBI) and 25 multiple traumas (MULT)) on the basis of the Neurobehavioral Scale, the SCL 90-R and the State/Trait Anxiety Scale. RESULTS: On the basis of the Neurobehavioral Scale, it was clear that the SBI patients suffered from significantly more disorders of type factor 1 (self-appraisal and flexible thinking), factor II (withdrawal), factor III …
Pulmonary emphysema in cystic fibrosis detected by densitometry on chest multidetector computed tomography.
2013
BackgroundHistopathological studies on lung specimens from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and recent results from a mouse model indicate that emphysema may contribute to CF lung disease. However, little is known about the relevance of emphysema in patients with CF. In the present study, we used computationally generated density masks based on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the chest for non-invasive characterization and quantification of emphysema in CF.MethodsVolumetric MDCT scans were acquired in parallel to pulmonary function testing in 41 patients with CF (median age 20.1 years; range 7-66 years) and 21 non-CF controls (median age 30.4 years; range 4-68 years), and subj…
Elderly obese women display the greatest improvement in stair climbing performance after a 3-week body mass reduction program
2004
OBJECTIVE: To depict the general trends of muscle anaerobic performance in obese subjects within a wide range of age and body weight. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study for the measurement of lower limb maximal anaerobic power output with a modification of the Margaria stair climbing test in a large population of obese subjects of both genders within a wide span of age (18-80 y) and body mass index (BMI, 30-68 kg m(-2)). Furthermore, body composition was also determined by bioimpedance analysis in a representative subgroup, in order to evaluate the relationships between fat-free mass (FFM) and power output. SUBJECTS: A total of 1298 obese subjects (486 males, 812 females) from an Italian populat…
Differences between orthopaedic evaluation and radiological reports of conventional radiographs in patients with minor trauma admitted to the emergen…
2017
Abstract Introduction During night and on weekends, in our emergency department there is no radiologist on duty or on call: thus, X-ray examinations (XR) are evaluated by the orthopaedic surgeon on duty and reported the following morning/monday by radiologists. The aim of our study was to examine the discrepancy rate between orthopaedists and radiologists in the interpretation of imaging examinations performed on patients in our tertiary level orthopaedic institution and the consequences of delayed diagnosis in terms of patient management and therapeutic strategy. Materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed all cases of discrepancy between orthopaedists and radiologists, which were ca…
Elevated concentration of oxidized LDL together with poor cardiorespiratory and abdominal muscle fitness predicts metabolic syndrome in young men
2013
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased oxidized LDL (ox-LDL), systemic inflammation, and poor cardiorespiratory fitness. We examined affiliations of these factors and the effect of muscular fitness on MetS in young healthy men.Physical fitness, ox-LDL, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and serum lipids were measured in a nationally representative sample of Finnish young men with and without MetS. Participants (mean age 25.1years) performed tests of maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) and muscle fitness, and were divided into MetS (n=54, IDF 2007 criteria) and non-MetS (n=790). Age, smoking and leisure-time physical activity were used as covariates (ANCOVA).The …
Six Sessions of Sprint Interval Training Improves Running Performance in Trained Athletes
2017
Abstract Koral, J, Oranchuk, DJ, Herrera, R, and Millet, GY. Six sessions of sprint interval training improves running performance in trained athletes. J Strength Cond Res 32(3): 617–623, 2018—Sprint interval training (SIT) is gaining popularity with endurance athletes. Various studies have shown that SIT allows for similar or greater endurance, strength, and power performance improvements than traditional endurance training but demands less time and volume. One of the main limitations in SIT research is that most studies were performed in a laboratory using expensive treadmills or ergometers. The aim of this study was to assess the performance effects of a novel short-term and highly acces…
Effect of frontal lobe lesions on the recollection and familiarity components of recognition memory
2008
Single-process theories assume that familiarity is the sole influence on recognition memory with decisions being made as a continuous process. Dual-process theories claim that recognition involves both recollection and familiarity processes with recollection as a threshold process. Although, the frontal lobes of the brain play an important role in recognition memory, few studies have examined the effect of frontal lobe lesions on recollection and familiarity. In the current study, the nonverbal recognition memory of 24 patients with focal frontal lesions due to turnout or stroke was examined. Recollection and familiarity were estimated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) metho…
Limitations of the trail making test part-B in assessing frontal executive dysfunction.
2015
AbstractPart B of the Trail Making Test (TMT-B) is one of the most widely used neuropsychological tests of “executive” function. A commonly held assumption is that the TMT-B can be used to detect frontal executive dysfunction. However, so far, research evidence has been limited and somewhat inconclusive. In this retrospective study, performance on the TMT-B of 55 patients with known focal frontal lesions, 27 patients with focal non-frontal lesions and 70 healthy controls was compared. Completion time and the number of errors made were examined. Patients with frontal and non-frontal lesions performed significantly worse than healthy controls for both completion time and the number of errors.…
21-Hydroxylase and 11beta-hydroxylase mutations in Romanian patients with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
2005
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) comprises autosomal recessive disorders mainly due to defects in the 21-hydroxylase (CYP21) gene. The study aimed to perform molecular characterization in 43 Romanian patients with classical CAH forms diagnosed at the Center for Genetic Diseases of the Pediatric Clinic/University Cluj (38 with 21-hydroxylase deficiency, five with 11beta-hydroxylase deficiency), to determine the frequency of mutations in the CYP21A2 gene and attempt a genotype-phenotype correlation in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency.Molecular analysis was performed by direct sequencing of PCR amplified products of the CYP21A2 and CYP11B1 genes. The most frequent mutation in Romanian…
