The object of study is the disappeared Rione Conceria inside the Historical Center of Palerm…

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-Releasing Microspheres Based on Poly(ε-Caprolactone-PEG-ε-Caprolactone)-b-Poly(L-Lactide) Multiblock Copolymers In…

2020

Pancreatic islet transplantation is a promising advanced therapy that has been used to treat patients suffering from diabetes type 1. Traditionally, pancreatic islets are infused via the portal vein, which is subsequently intended to engraft in the liver. Severe immunosuppressive treatments are necessary, however, to prevent rejection of the transplanted islets. Novel approaches therefore have focused on encapsulation of the islets in biomaterial implants which can protect the islets and offer an organ-like environment. Vascularization of the device’s surface is a prerequisite for the survival and proper func- tioning of transplanted pancreatic islets. We are pursuing a prevascularization s…

Augmented Reality of the Middle Ear Combining Otoendoscopy and Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

2018

International audience; HYPOTHESIS:Augmented reality (AR) may enhance otologic procedures by providing sub-millimetric accuracy and allowing the unification of information in a single screen.BACKGROUND:Several issues related to otologic procedures can be addressed through an AR system by providing sub-millimetric precision, supplying a global view of the middle ear cleft, and advantageously unifying the information in a single screen. The AR system is obtained by combining otoendoscopy with temporal bone computer tomography (CT).METHODS:Four human temporal bone specimens were explored by high-resolution CT-scan and dynamic otoendoscopy with video recordings. The initialization of the system…

Coxsackievirus B3-Induced Cellular Protrusions: Structural Characteristics and Functional Competence▿†

2011

ABSTRACT Virus-induced alterations in cell morphology play important roles in the viral life cycle. To examine the intracellular events of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection, green monkey kidney (GMK) cells were either inoculated with the virus or transfected with the viral RNA. Various microscopic and flow cytometric approaches demonstrated the emergence of CVB3 capsid proteins at 8 h posttransfection, followed by morphological transformation of the cells. The morphological changes included formation of membranous protrusions containing viral capsids, together with microtubules and actin. Translocation of viral capsids into these protrusions was sensitive to cytochalasin D, suggesting the …

Analysis of the depth of field of integral imaging displays based on wave optics.

2013

In this paper, we analyze the depth of field (DOF) of integral imaging displays based on wave optics. With considering the diffraction effect, we analyze the intensity distribution of light with multiple micro-lenses and derive a DOF calculation formula for integral imaging display system. We study the variations of DOF values with different system parameters. Experimental results are provided to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The analyses and experimental results presented in this paper could be beneficial for better understanding and designing of integral imaging displays.

Left-Ventricle Segmentation of SPECT Images of Rats

2015

Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging of the heart is helpful to quantify the left-ventricular ejection fraction and study myocardial perfusion scans. However, these evaluations require a 3-D segmentation of the left-ventricular wall on each phase of the cardiac cycle. This paper presents a fast and interactive graph cut method for 3-D segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) of rats in SPECT images. The method is carried out in three steps. First, 3-D sampling of the LV cavity is made in a spherical-cylindrical coordinate system. Then, a graph-cut-based energy minimization procedure provides delineation of the myocardium centerline surface. From there, it is possible to…

Three-dimensional object detection under arbitrary lighting conditions

2006

A novel method of 3D object recognition independent of lighting conditions is presented. The recognition model is based on a vector space representation using an orthonormal basis generated by the Lambertian reflectance functions obtained with distant light sources. Changing the lighting conditions corresponds to multiplying the elementary images by a constant factor and because of that, all possible lighting views will be elements that belong to that vector space. The recognition method proposed is based on the calculation of the angle between the vector associated with a certain illuminated 3D object and that subspace. We define the angle in terms of linear correlations to get shift and i…

Some Considerations on 3-D and 2-D Numerical Models for the Assessment of the Stability of Underground Caves

2014

The application of numerical modeling to the analysis of the stability of both natural and man-made underground caves is rapidly increasing due to the availability of powerful numerical codes, that can account for either continuum or discontinuum behavior of the rock masses. Numerical methods allow to overcome traditional methods for cave stability analysis that assume too simplified geometrical, geological and geomechanical conditions. Further, they are also able to assess the potential failure mechanisms of underground systems. On the other hand, the application of numerical methods requires availability of a detailed geo-structural survey of the cave, as well as a proper geomechanical ch…

Anterolateral thigh perforator flap made by customized 3D-printing fabrication of fixed positioning guide for oromaxillofacial reconstruction:a preli…

2022

Oromaxillofacial carcinomas frequently result in serious tissue defect due to enlarged resection for treating their extensive invasion, which require challenging reconstruction. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced technology which has greatly promoted the progress of craniomaxillofacial reconstructive surgery. This present study aimed to investigate the advantages of anterolateral thigh (ALT) perforator flap manufactured by 3D printing fixed positioning guide template in curing oromaxillofacial defect. Twenty patients with oromaxillofacial defects resulted from severe primary malignant tumors were divided into experimental group assisted by digital technique (n=8) and controlled …
