RECURRENT RENAL CARCINOMA MIMICKING A GOITRE: A CASE REPORT

2013

Although the thyroid is a high vascularised gland, it is not common terget of metastases from extraglandular cancer. We reported a case of a 70 year-old woman who underwnt total thyroidectomy for multinodular goitre. In the patient's clinical hystory a nephrectomy was carried out 2 years before due to unspecified causes. The histopathological examination of the thyiroid showed a pattern compatible with clear cell renal carcinoma metastasis. The patient's relatives revealed, when questioned again, that the nephrectomy was due to the presence of a clear renal cell carcinoma keep concealed to the patients. Thanks to a timely intervention, the mass was removed and a better survival was guarante…

Skull-Cervico-Mandibular Unit: Correlation between Hyoid Bone, Thyroid Gland and Posture

2010

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the postural control of the patient with pathology or surgery of the neck area. We have examined a group of subjects with thyroid pathology and destined to total thyroidectomy. Method: Our sample comprised 10 patients (7 female and 3 male; mean age 50,9±15,8). They have been submitted to postural examination, before and after total thyroidectomy, using the baropodometric platform, the scoliosismeter and the ocular convergence test. All the values obtained from the baropodometric tests executed before and after thyroidectomy have been compared using a statistical analysis. The T Student test and a significant level of 5% (a=0,05;p£,05) have been …

Azione antalgica di Hydrogel nell'orbitopatia basedowiana

2007

DOES STILL EXIST A CORRELATION BETWEEN X-RAYS OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE AND BENIGN NODULAR THYROID DISEASE?

2019

Objective: The prevalence of benign nodular thyroid disease in the general population is high, as shown by various studies, and the diagnosis is eased by the improved diagnostic capacity of the instruments used. The aim of the present study is the evaluation of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation as a possible significant risk factor in the determinism of this pathology. Method: A cross-sectional observational study in “A category” X-ray exposed workers (doctors, nurses, technicians) of the University Hospital of Palermo, compared with a sample of the general population, was carried out from June 2016 to June 2017. We evaluated data obtained from the Personal Health Records, includi…

Selenium and Autoimmune Thyroiditis

2019

The essential mineral, selenium, is of fundamental importance to human health. As a constituent of selenoproteins, selenium has structural and enzymic roles, in the latter context being best-known as an antioxidant and catalyst for the production of active thyroid hormone. Selenium is needed for the proper functioning of the immune system. An elevated selenium intake may be associated with reduced cancer risk

SELENIUM AND AUTOIMMUNE THYROIDITIS

2023

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element of pivotal importance to human health. Se is incorporated into selenoproteins (SePs) which have pleiotropic effects, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and in the production of active thyroid hormone. These findings may explain the relationship between Se deficiency and pathogenesis of various human diseases including thyroid disorder. In line with these observations, the therapeutic effectiveness of Se supplementation has already been reported in patients with various thyroid diseases. However, there are still controversial data about the optimal dose of Se to be administered, as well as the duration and efficacy of treatment an…
