One of the main goals of 21st century chemistry is to replace environmentally hazardous processes with energy efficient routes allowing to totally avoid the use and production of harmful chemicals and to maximise the quantity of raw material that ends up in the final product. Selective photocatalytic conversions will play a major role in this evolution and this account shows how photocatalysis is offering an alternative green route for the production of organics.
Polystyrene nanoparticle-templated hollow titania nanosphere monolayers as ordered scaffolds

We report a novel multi-step method for the preparation of ordered mesoporous titania scaffolds and show an illustrative example of their application to solar cells. The method is based on (monolayer) colloidal nanosphere lithography that makes use of polystyrene nanoparticles organised at a water–air interface and subsequently transferred onto a solid substrate. A titania precursor solution (titanium(IV) isopropoxide in ethanol) is then drop-cast onto the monolayer and left to “incubate” overnight. The effect of hydrogen on the molecular weight of polyethylene obtained over vanadium catalysts (based on VCl4 and VOCl3) supported on MgCl2(THF)2 was studied and the results were compared to those obtained for similar titanium catalysts. It was confirmed that the dependencies of the transfer reaction on the hydrogen concentration are a half‐order in all investigated systems. However, the transition metal of the catalytic site affects the ratio of the transfer rate with hydrogen to the propagation rate (ktr,H/kp) and the results showed that hydrogen is a more effective agent of polyethylene molecular weight control in vanadium‐based systems as compared to the titanium catalyst.

The photoelectrocatalytic partial oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol in aqueous solution irradiated by near-UV light was carried out in a three-electrode batch reactor. TiO2 films were either deposited by dip-coating of a TiO2 sol onto a Ti foil and subsequent calcination or generated on Ti plates by thermal oxidation in air at 400-700 degrees C. A Straightforward Route to Homoallyl-Homocrotylamines Promoted by a Titanium Complex

I�-Allyltitanium complexes, generated in situ from 1,3-dienes and Cp2TiH, react with benzotriazole derivatives to give homoallylic amines in good yields. Under similar conditions, triple cascade reactions (allyltitanation followed by cationic 2-aza-Cope rearrangement followed by a second allyltitanation) occur from bis(benzotriazolyl) compounds affording a straightforward route to homoallyl-(E)-homocrotylamines.
