A critical review on supply chain risk – Definition, measure and modeling

2015

Abstract Economic systems are increasingly prone to complexity and uncertainty. Therefore, making well-informed decisions requires risk analysis, control and mitigation. In some areas such as finance, insurance, crisis management and health care, the importance of considering risk is largely acknowledged and well-elaborated, yet rather heterogeneous concepts and approaches for risk management have been developed. The increased frequency and the severe consequences of past supply chain disruptions have resulted in an increasing interest in risk. This development has led to the adoption of the risk concepts, terminologies and methods from related fields. In this paper, existing approaches for…

Low-cost motion control solution for industrial manufacturing systems

2011

This paperwork deals with a low-cost actuation solution, based upon induction motors, which was seldom used in the motion control systems, especially for the machine tools feed drives. A simulation approach, based upon a mathematical model of the induction motor, for tuning the controllers of the systems is presented. Experimental researches developed upon a two axes motion control system, both axes being driven by alternating current asynchronous motors were also performed in order to test the proposed strategies. The asynchronous motors, used as actuation devices were equipped with incremental rotary encoders and controlled by vector frequency inverters and DSP motion control cards were u…

Web Tool for Path Analysis in Wireless Sensor Networks to Improve Their Performance

2018

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are based on tiny autonomous devices, usually named motes or nodes, and are used in many monitoring applications, such as environment, habitat, precision horticulture, etc. These motes are power-limited and most energy is wasted through the communication process when exchanging data packets. Because these motes are quite simple, with low power transmission and simple antennas, these networks usually run multihop routing protocols in order to forward packets between one mote to the sink, or the collector node, using the other motes as relaying motes. Basically, these routing protocols try to find out new routes within these wireless network, optimizing differe…

AX-PET: A novel PET detector concept with full 3D reconstruction

2009

We describe the concept and first experimental tests of a novel 3D axial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) geometry. It allows for a new way of measuring the interaction point in the detector with very high precision. It is based on a matrix of long Lutetium-Yttrium OxyorthoSilicate (LYSO) crystals oriented in the axial direction, each coupled to one Geiger Mode Avalanche Photodiode (G-APD) array. To derive the axial coordinate, Wave Length Shifter (WLS) strips are mounted orthogonally and interleaved between the crystals. The light from the WLS strips is read by custom-made G-APDs. The weighted mean of the signals in the WLS strips has proven to give very precise axial resolution. The ach…

APPLICATION OF REAL-TIME POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR RAPID DETERMINATION OFSALMONELLAIN RESTAURANT FOODS

2008

Several foods have been identified as frequently or occasionally contaminated with Salmonella, such as eggs, raw milk and all raw foods of animal origin that may carry salmonella and other bacteria. Salmonellosis is the most common food-borne illness, but it is usually preventable according to the implementation of a food safety system that includes Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point. In this study, 96 food samples of the University restaurant of Valencia (Spain) were divided into four groups: first course; main course; accompaniment; and dessert, and were analyzed simultaneously with classical and fluorogenic polymerase chain reaction microbiological analysis. Neither of the proced…

Measuring Illness Behavior in One Minute

2019

Abstract. The present study addresses shortcomings in previous psychometric research into the Scale for the Assessment of Illness Behavior (SAIB) and develops a short form, the SAIB-10. We used ant-colony optimization to construct a subset of items in an exploratory sample ( n = 1,187) and affirmed it in factor analysis in a confirmatory sample ( n = 1,208). We find excellent model fit and evidence for strict invariance across sex and age. As expected, there were associations with distressed personality, perceived social support, and mental health. Finally, we report normative values for usage by researchers and clinicians. In sum, the SAIB-10 is an economical measure of illness behavior a…

CUSHAW3: Sensitive and Accurate Base-Space and Color-Space Short-Read Alignment with Hybrid Seeding

2014

The majority of next-generation sequencing short-reads can be properly aligned by leading aligners at high speed. However, the alignment quality can still be further improved, since usually not all reads can be correctly aligned to large genomes, such as the human genome, even for simulated data. Moreover, even slight improvements in this area are important but challenging, and usually require significantly more computational endeavor. In this paper, we present CUSHAW3, an open-source parallelized, sensitive and accurate short-read aligner for both base-space and color-space sequences. In this aligner, we have investigated a hybrid seeding approach to improve alignment quality, which incorp…

Educational Tools for Second Life: a handbook for educators in virtual worlds.

2010

As a result of two collective activities organised during the MUVEnation programme, we have produced a collection of educational tools for Second Life. This collection has been produced in two stages. First, back in September 2008, 33 partcipants in the introductory module worked together in groups for the identification of more than 100 tools used for teaching and learning in Second Life. Later, in March 2009, 55 education professionals (lecturers, researchers, learning technologists and teachers) have collected, tested and fully described more than 150 tools. The result of this collective work has been transformed into a book, published as an Open Educational Resource under CC licence by …

THE VALIDATION OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR THE TEACHER'S PRACTICES THAT EMBRACES THE NEURO-EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

2021

This contribution intends to present a study and research path that, starting from the theoretical framework of neuro-education, has led to the identification of five indicators (transversal area, socio-emotional-affective area, cognitive area, linguistic-communicative area, praxico-motor) on the basis of which a neuro-evaluation tool for teachers was built and validated: Self-assessment questionnaire of neuro-didactic and educational practices for teachers. Neuroscientific research is offering numerous points of reflection-action on the functioning of the brain and on how to modify the teaching and the educational proposal to improve the performance and growth of the person. However, the p…

Seamless Learning Environments in Higher Education with Mobile Devices and Examples

2016

The use of seamless learning environments that have the potential to support lifelong learning anytime and anywhere has become a reality. In this sense, many educational institutions have started to consider introducing seamless learning environments into their programs. The aim of this study is to analyze how various educational university programs implement the design elements for seamless learning environments with mobile devices. For that purpose, three cases involved in a Finnish teaching development project are explored by conducting semi-structured interviews with key participants. The themes of the interviews were related to the theoretical background for (mobile) seamless learning …
