Sulla viabilità del territorio di Palma di Montechiaro. Brevi note in margine al progetto "Cignana"

Dinamiche insediative nel comprensorio di Cignana. Continuità e discontinuità tra l'età imperiale e l'età bizantina
2013
The aim of this paper is to illustrate the development of rural settlement of Roman age, in the hinterland of Cignana (close to Agrigento, Sicily). In this area were identified an Early Roman age villa and a Late Roman/Byzantine village, partially excavated by the Superintendence of Agrigento. Since 2007 the Dep. of Beni Culturali of University of Palermo has carried out an intensive and systematic archaeological survey around Cignana, where about 200 archaeological sites were identified. Many sites (farms, and perhaps also some villa) were inhabited from late Hellenistic to Late Roman/Byzantine ages, and some have become very large villages; also, many settlements are placed along the prin…

Close range photogrammetry for measurement of paintings surface deformation
2009
The paper describes the first results about a study on the measurement of paintings surface deformation. The study was carried out using one ancient painting model made in a restoration laboratory and consolidated with the materials and dilutions most frequently used in the field of conservation. The restorers suppose deformations of the paintings surface from 0.1 mm to some millimetre when the painting model is keeping in environment with the presence of humidity and temperature fluctuations. The main purpose of the study is to evaluate the relative accuracy and the reliability of multi-images photogrammetric techniques related to the camera stations network and to the commercial software …
3D mosaic documentation using close range photogrammetry
2015
The paper describes the close range photogrammetric survey of a roman mosaic stored at Regional Archaeological Museum “Antonino Salinas” in Palermo (Italy). The aim of the work is the production of a full-scale representation (scale 1:1) of the mosaic useful for documentation and restoration processes. The research has allowed evaluating limit and potentiality of image-based approach using photogrammetric and computer vision (Structure for Motion) techniques in a context where the metric point of view is a very important factor.
Robustified smoothing for enhancement of thermal image sequences affected by clouds
2015
Obtaining radiometric surface temperature information with both high acquisition rate and high spatial resolution is still not possible through a single sensor. However, in several earth observation applications, the fusion of data acquired by different sensors is a viable solution for so called image sharpening. A related issue is the presence of clouds, which may impair the performance of the data fusion algorithms. In this paper we propose a robustified setup for the sharpening of thermal images in a non real-time scenario, capable to deal with missing thermal data due to cloudy pixels, and robust with respect to cloud mask misclassifications. The effectiveness of the presented technique…
Soil water content monitoring: a verification of thermal inertia approaches on low spatial, high temporal resolutions images
2013
Soil water content is directly connected with soil evaporation and plant transpiration processes; in particular, soil water content within the root zone, is readily available to evapotranspiration. Thus, in agricultural sciences, the assessment of the spatial distribution of soil water content could be of utmost importance in evaluating crop water requirement. In spite of limitations to applicability due to contingent cloud cover, water content of the upper part of the soil can be determined by applying the thermal inertia approach by coupling optical and thermal infrared images. The thermal inertia formulation, rigorously retrieved on bare soil, has been also verified on soils partially co…
Critical analysis of the thermal inertia approach to map soil water content under sparse vegetation and changeable sky conditions
2012
The paper reports a critical analysis of the thermal inertia approach to map surface soil water content on bare and sparsely vegetated soils by means of remotely sensed data. The study area is an experimental area located in Barrax (Spain). Field data were acquired within the Barrax 2011 research project. AHS airborne images including VIS/NIR and TIR bands were acquired both day and night time by the INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnica Aeroespacial) between the 11 th and 13 rd of June 2011. Images cover a corn pivot surrounded by bare soil, where a set of in situ data have been collected previously and simultaneously to overpasses. To validate remotely sensed estimations, a preliminary prox…
Information systems for preservation of cultural heritage
2000
The preservation of the cultural heritage has become at present a subject of fundamental importance in Italy, above all because of the numerous unhappy events, due to not only natural reasons, happened in these last years. Besides this problem is particularly urgent in Sicily, because of the existence of a considerable cultural heritage and in absence of a complete and systematic inventory. To tackle such a complex subject, the use of informatics is required, since the traditional methods, based especially on paper documentation, are absolutely inadequate. Particularly, this work deals with the cultural heritage inventory selected according to: - historical urban centres; - archaeological s…
The virtual reconstruction of temple B in Selinunte excavation site
2008
This paper proposes a study on the virtual reconstruction of temple B in Selinunte. It is the smallest of Selinunte’s temples yet, despite its size, it has been the subject of great interest and debate by scholars since its discovery in 1823. The studies carried out throughout the XIX century and the first half of the XX century provided different renderings, especially as to the organization of the elevation. The goal of this work is the virtual anastylosis of temple B, through the study of all available historical sources, the survey of fragments preserved today at the “A.Salinas” Regional Archaeology Museum in Palermo, and the survey of the finds at Selinunte’s site. The virtual reconstr…
