Fast, Reliable Head Tracking Under Varying Illumination

2003

An improved technique for 3D head tracking under varying illumination conditions is proposed. The head is modeled as a texture mapped cylinder. Tracking is formulated as an image registration problem in the cylinder's texture map image. To solve the registration problem in the presence of lighting variation and head motion, the residual error of registration is modeled as a linear combination of texture warping templates and orthogonal illumination templates. Fast and stable on-line tracking is then achieved via regularized weighted least squares minimization of the registration error. The regularization term tends to limit potential ambiguities that arise in the warping and illumination te…

Head Tracking via Robust Registration in Texture Map Images.

1998

A novel method for 3D head tracking in the presence of large head rotations and facial expression changes is described. Tracking is formulated in terms of color image registration in the texture map of a 3D surface model. Model appearance is recursively updated via image mosaicking in the texture map as the head orientation varies. The resulting dynamic texture map provides a stabilized view of the face that can be used as input to many existing 2D techniques for face recognition, facial expressions analysis, lip reading, and eye tracking. Parameters are estimated via a robust minimization procedure; this provides robustness to occlusions, wrinkles, shadows and specular highlights. The syst…

Mostrare l’invisibile: il soffitto trecentesco nascosto del convento di Santa Caterina a Palermo

2022

Digital surveying and representation technologies have been widely used for the visualization of works of art and architecture that no longer exist or have been moved from their original location. These researches share a common feature, that can be resumed by the motto “Display the invisible”, already used in research experiences [Colosi et al. 2015; Gambin et al. 2021]. The purpose of this research is the visualization of a 14th century wooden ceiling, painted by anonymous artists, that covered the hall used for the assembly of the Chapter in the convent of Santa Caterina, at the heart of the historic center of Palermo. The hall was reshaped at the end of the 18th century to serve as a sa…

Domain-specific understanding of digitally represented graphs is necessary for successful learning within and across domains in higher education. Two recent studies conducted a cross-sectional analysis of graph understanding in different contexts (physics and finance), task concepts, and question types among students of physics, psychology, and economics. However, neither changes in graph processing nor changes in test scores over the course of one semester have been sufficiently researched so far. This eye-tracking replication study with a pretest-posttest design examines and contrasts changes in physics and economics students' understanding of linear physics and finance graphs. It analyze…

A multidisciplinary approach to the study of cultural heritage environments: Experience at the Palatina Library in Parma

2015

The aim of this paper is to describe a multidisciplinary approach including biological and particle monitoring, and microclimate analysis associated with the application of the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). This approach was applied at the Palatina historical library in Parma. Monitoring was performed both in July and in December, in the absence of visitors and operators. Air microbial monitoring was performed with active and passive methods. Airborne particles with a diameter of ≥0.3, ≥0.5, ≥1 and ≥5 μm/m3, were counted by a laser particle counter. The surface contamination of shelves and manuscripts was assessed with nitrocellulose membranes. A spore trap sampler was used to identify…

Give us today our daily bread: The effect of hunger on consumers’ visual attention towards bread and the role of time orientation

2021

Abstract This study investigated the effect of hunger on consumers’ visual attention during a food choice task, and the role of time orientation (i.e., present and future orientation) in this interplay. A lab-based eye-tracking experiment including 102 participants was conducted, with hunger as the manipulated factor (hungry, satiated). Participants in the satiated condition were served a breakfast buffet before the experimental tasks, whereas participants in the hungry condition were served the buffet after completion of the tasks. Both groups were exposed to a set of planograms depicting supermarket shelves and were asked to choose an option they could consider buying, while their eye mov…

Reference tracking control of hypersonic vehicles using switched linear parameter-varying approach

2013

This paper is concerned with the control problem of the air-breathing hypersonic vehicle using switched linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems approach. By linearizing the nonlinear model of the hypersonic vehicle at trim points and dividing the velocity scope into several partitions, a switched LPV model for the underlying systems is derived. With aid of multiple Lyapunov-like functions technique, the controllers ensuring the tracking of given commands of the closed-loop system are designed under the mode-independent and mode-dependent switching logics, respectively. Simulation results for the hypersonic vehicle show the effectiveness of the proposed method and the advantages of the mode-d…

A simple and efficient face detection algorithm for video database applications

2000

The objective of this work is to provide a simple and yet efficient tool to detect human faces in video sequences. This information can be very useful for many applications such as video indexing and video browsing. In particular the paper focuses on the significant improvements made to our face detection algorithm presented by Albiol, Bouman and Delp (see IEEE Int. Conference on Image Processing, Kobe, Japan, 1999). Specifically, a novel approach to retrieve skin-like homogeneous regions is presented, which is later used to retrieve face images. Good results have been obtained for a large variety of video sequences. Peer Reviewed
