La perduta Chiesa dell'Annunziata presso Porta san Giorgio a Palermo: ipotesi e ricostruzioni virtuali

2020

The Annunziata church was destroyed by the bombings of the Allies on May 9 1943 on the city of Palermo. However, important evidence remains of the church, built at the end of the 16th century and located near the San Giorgio gate: a 1832 drawing by Pierre-Joseph Garrez, preserved in Paris, at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the survey of the architect Nino Pollaci of the early twentieth century, a series of historical photos, the surviving architectural fragments such as the capitals and the painted wooden coffered ceiling, preserved in various Palermitan museums, and above all the bell tower, still the only trace on the site of the now disappeared church of the Annunziata. Graph-based minimal path tracking in the skeleton of the retinal vascular network

2012

This paper presents a semi-automatic framework for minimal path tracking in the skeleton of the retinal vascular network. The method is based on the graph structure of the vessel network. The vascular network is represented based on the skeleton of the available segmented vessels and using an undirected graph. Significant points on the skeleton are considered nodes of the graph, while the edge of the graph is represented by the vessel segment linking two neighboring nodes. The graph is represented then in the form of a connectivity matrix, using a novel method for defining vertex connectivity. Dijkstra and Floyd-Warshall algorithms are applied for detection of minimal paths within the graph…

Video object recognition and modeling by SIFT matching optimization

2014

In this paper we present a novel technique for object modeling and object recognition in video. Given a set of videos containing 360 degrees views of objects we compute a model for each object, then we analyze short videos to determine if the object depicted in the video is one of the modeled objects. The object model is built from a video spanning a 360 degree view of the object taken against a uniform background. In order to create the object model, the proposed techniques selects a few representative frames from each video and local features of such frames. The object recognition is performed selecting a few frames from the query video, extracting local features from each frame and looki…

Exploiting Visual Saliency Algorithms for Object-Based Attention: A New Color and Scale-Based Approach

2017

Visual Saliency aims to detect the most important regions of an image from a perceptual point of view. More in detail, the goal of Visual Saliency is to build a Saliency Map revealing the salient subset of a given image by analyzing bottom-up and top-down factors of Visual Attention. In this paper we proposed a new method for Saliency detection based on colour and scale analysis, extending our previous work based on SIFT spatial density inspection. We conducted several experiments to study the relationships between saliency methods and the object attention processes and we collected experimental data by tracking the eye movements of thirty viewers in the first three seconds of observation o…

A tool to support the creation of datasets of tampered videos

2015

Digital Video Forensics is getting a growing interest from the Multimedia research community, as the need for methods to validate the authenticity of a video content is increasing with the number of videos freely available to the digital users. Unlike Digital Image Forensics, to our knowledge, there are not standard datasets to test video forgery detection techniques. In this paper we present a new tool to support the users in creating datasets of tampered videos. We furthermore present our own dataset and we discuss some remarks about how to create forgeries difficult to be detected by an observer, to the naked eye.

Deep learning techniques for visual object tracking

2023

Visual object tracking plays a crucial role in various vision systems, including biometric analysis, medical imaging, smart traffic systems, and video surveillance. Despite notable advancements in visual object tracking over the past few decades, many tracking algorithms still face challenges due to factors like illumination changes, deformation, and scale variations. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the visual object tracking problem and discusses the traditional approaches that have been used to study it. We then propose a novel method called Tracking by Iterative Multi-Refinements, which addresses the issue of locating the target by redefining the search…

Fast, Reliable Head Tracking under Varying Illumination: An Approach Based on Robust Registration of Texture-Mapped 3D Models

2000

An improved technique for 3D head tracking under varying illumination conditions is proposed. The head is modeled as a texture mapped cylinder. Tracking is formulated as an image registration problem in the cylinder's texture map image. The resulting dynamic texture map provides a stabilized view of the face that can be used as input to many existing 2D techniques for face recognition, facial expressions analysis, lip reading, and eye tracking. To solve the registration problem in the presence of lighting variation and head motion, the residual error of registration is modeled as a linear combination of texture warping templates and orthogonal illumination templates. Fast and stable on-line…

An on-line learning method for face association in personal photo collection

2012

Due to the widespread use of cameras, it is very common to collect thousands of personal photos. A proper organization is needed to make the collection usable and to enable an easy photo retrieval. In this paper, we present a method to organize personal photo collections based on ''who'' is in the picture. Our method consists in detecting the faces in the photo sequence and arranging them in groups corresponding to the probable identities. This problem can be conveniently modeled as a multi-target visual tracking where a set of on-line trained classifiers is used to represent the identity models. In contrast to other works where clustering methods are used, our method relies on a probabilis…

Pedestrian Tracking in 360 Video by Virtual PTZ Cameras

2018

Since the data acquired by a PTZ camera change while adjusting the pan, tilt and zoom parameters, the results of tracking algorithms are difficult to reproduce; such diffi- culty limits the development and the comparison of tracking algorithms with PTZ cameras. The recently introduced 360- degree cameras acquire spherical views of the environment, generally stored as equirectangular images. Each pixel of an equirectangular image corresponds to a point on the spherical surface. A gnomonic projection can be used to project the points on the spherical surface onto a plane tangent to the sphere. Such tangent plane can be interpreted as the image plane of a virtual PTZ camera oriented towards th…

CubeHarmonic: A new musical instrument based on Rubik{'}s cube with embedded motion sensor

2019

A contemporary challenge involves scientific education and the connection between new technologies and the heritage of the past. CubeHarmonic (CH) joins novelty and tradition, creativity and edu- cation, science and art. It takes shape as a novel musical instrument where magnetic 3D motion tracking technology meets musical per- formance and composition. CH is a Rubik’s cube with a note on each facet, and a chord or chord sequence on each face. The posi- tion of each facet is detected through magnetic 3D motion tracking. While scrambling the cube, the performer gets new chords and new chord sequences. CH can be used to compose, improvise,1 and teach music and mathematics (group theory, permu…
