Antioxidant activity of anti-inflammatory plant extracts
2002
The antioxidant properties of twenty medical herbs used in the traditional Mediterranean and Chinese medicine were studied. Extracts from Forsythia suspensa, Helichrysum italicum, Scrophularia auriculata, Inula viscosa, Coptis chinensis, Poria cocos and Scutellaria baicalensis had previously shown anti-inflammatory activity in different experimental models. Using free radical-generating systems H. italicum. I. viscosa and F. suspensa protected against enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation in model membranes and also showed scavenging property on the superoxide radical. All extracts were assayed at a concentration of 100 microg/ml. Most of the extracts were weak scavengers of the hy…
Modulation of P450 enzymes by Cuban natural products rich in polyphenolic compounds in rat hepatocytes.
2008
This paper reports cytotoxic effects and changes in the P450 system after exposing rat hepatocytes to four polyphenol-rich products widely used in Cuban traditional medicine (Mangifera indica L. (MSBE), Thalassia testudinum (Tt), Erythroxylum minutifolium and confusum extracts). Effects of mangiferin, the main polyphenol in MSBE, were also evaluated. Cytotoxicity was assayed by the MTT test after exposure of cells to the products (50-1000 microg/mL) for 24 or 72 h. The results showed that 500 microg/mL MSBE was moderately cytotoxic after 72 h, while mangiferin was not. Marked reductions in cell viability were produced by Erythroxylum extracts at concentrationsor = 200 microg/mL, whereas onl…
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
2019
Background: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and -2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle- and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associ…
De Platonis "Parmenidis" codicibus quaestiones
2021
Si fa un censimento completo dei manoscritti che contengono il "Parmenide" di Platone e se ne definiscono i rapporti, proponendo innovazioni e integrazioni rispetto agli studi di C. Moreschini (1965-66). A complete census is made of the manuscripts that contain Plato's "Parmenides" and their relationships are defined, proposing innovations and additions with respect to the studies of C. Moreschini (1965-66).
Matka Jezusa w nauczaniu i tradycji apostolskiej wzorem współczesnej katechezy maryjnej
2018
Trzeba też sięgać do Ojców Kościoła i wielkich teologów maryjnych, którzy byli piewcami Matki Słowa.
This note proposes a review of Middle-Latin poetic texts of the 11th-13th centuries – in particular the elegiac comedies and the misogynistic compositions – in which the metaphorical, oxymorical and paronomastic opposition "mel" ~ "fel" appears, aimed at stigmatizing the duplicity that often characterizes the behavior of men and, above…
Plant genetic resources and traditional knowledge on medicinal use of wild shrub and herbaceous plant species in the Etna Regional Park (Eastern Sici…
2014
Ethnopharmacological relevance: This paper illustrates the results of a study carried out in the Etna Regional Park (Eastern Sicily, Italy) concerning the traditional knowledge on medicinal use of wild plant species. It specifies contains the results of a quantitative analysis carried out for the first time. A total of 71 wild species are used for medicinal purposes. Two species, Astracantha sicula (Biv.) Greuter and Trifolium phleoides Willd., are little known as medicinal in the Mediterranean area. Aim of the study: The main aim of the study was to understand to what extent current knowledge on the medicinal use of plants is still an element of the culture within the elderly population of…
Consumption of spices and ethnic contamination in the daily diet of Italians - consumers’ preferences and modification of eating habits
2021
AbstractCurrently, consumers appear to have diversified characteristics with regard to food tastes and consumption habits. The globalization of markets and the migration phenomenon contributed to the modification of food preferences of consumers who gradually introduce into their eating habits foods and recipes typical of the tradition of foreign countries. In this scenario, also in Italy, it is going to increase the use of “foreign products” with the consequent fusion of traditional cuisine techniques and recipes with ingredients that are typical of foreign countries and cultures. Foods and ingredients originally consumed in Asian or South American countries are increasingly consumed by It…
Herbal medicinal products - Evidence and tradition from a historical perspective.
2017
Abstract Background Aside from the fully licensed herbal medicines there are products on the European pharmaceutical market which are registered by virtue of their longstanding traditional use. The normal registration procedure does not apply to them because presently they do not meet the legal requirements for a full license as set out in the relevant European Union Directive. One of these requirements, “proof of tradition”, has so far been dealt with in different ways and fails to meet the criteria of good practice. Method This analysis is based on a selective literature search in PubMed and in databases of medical and pharmaceutical history, interviews with licensing experts, a consensus…
Microbial diversity of traditional Sicilian cheeses
2017
Traditional Sicilian cheeses are manufactured in small size farms with raw milk from animals of indigenous breeds and without the addition of starter cultures. In order to transform milk into cheese, the presence of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is required. The main sources of desirable LAB are generally the milk, the rennet, the equipment used during processing and the dairy environment. In the last years, the microbial characterisation of traditional Sicilian cheeses, such as Caciocavallo Palermitano, Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Pecorino Siciliano and PDO Vastedda della valle del Belìce have been the object of different studies conducted by our research group. To this purpose, the…
