Toxicogenomics for the prediction of toxicity related to herbs from traditional Chinese medicine.
2010
Toxicogenomics represents the integration of genomics and toxicology to investigate the interaction between genes and environmental stress in human health. It is a scientific field that studies how the genome is involved in responses to environmental stressors and toxicants. The patterns of altered gene expression that are caused by specific exposures or disease outcomes reveal how toxicants may act and cause disease. Nowadays, toxicogenomics faces great challenges in discriminating the molecular basis of toxicity. We do believe that advances in this field will eventually allow us to describe all the toxicological interactions that occur within a living system. Toxicogenomic responses of a …
Review of current and “omics” methods for assessing the toxicity (genotoxicity, teratogenicity and nephrotoxicity) of herbal medicines and mushrooms
2012
Ethnopharmacological relevance: The increasing use of traditional herbal medicines around the world requires more scientific evidence for their putative harmlessness. To this end, a plethora of methods exist, more or less satisfying. In this post-genome era, recent reviews are however scarce, not only on the use of new "omics" methods (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabonomics) for genotoxicity, teratogenicity, and nephrotoxicity assessment, but also on conventional ones. Methods: The present work aims (i) to review conventional methods used to assess genotoxicity, teratogenicity and nephrotoxicity of medicinal plants and mushrooms; (ii) to report recent progress in the use of "omics" techn…
Transgresión moral y enfermedad en los países nórdicos en la temprana Edad Moderna
2009
This article seeks to understand how people in the early modern age interpreted the nature of illness and the role that morality played in these interpretations. From this point of view illnesses were not only psycho-physical states or subjects for medical diagnosis but they were also subjects for narratives or stories through which people tried to understand what had caused their illness, and why it was happening to them. Illnesses were understood as strictly connected with the patient's character and were regarded as possible consequences of his personality. On the other hand, the interpretations also emphasised the ambivalence of a healer. Personal experiences and an understanding of one…
Elderly Parents’ Need for Help and Adult Children's Moving Decisions
2015
Recent changes in Finnish welfare policies have increased the need for family involvement in eldercare. This article uses qualitative interviews to study working adult daughters’ reasons for moving in with their parent(s). Coresidence was linked to the parents’ need for support, but also to the daughters’ life situations, family histories, the availability of welfare services, and cultural norms and values. The interviewees used the “familist” and “independent life” discourses in their speech. The familist discourse was used to argue for coresidence as a natural continuation of family traditions and life history, whereas the independent life discourse was used to legitimize the need for alt…
The endoperoxide ascaridol shows strong differential cytotoxicity in nucleotide excision repair-deficient cells
2011
Targeting synthetic lethality in DNA repair pathways has become a promising anti-cancer strategy. However little is known about such interactions with regard to the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. Therefore, cell lines with a defect in the NER genes ERCC6 or XPC and their normal counterparts were screened with 53 chemically defined phytochemicals isolated from plants used in traditional Chinese medicine for differential cytotoxic effects. The screening revealed 12 drugs that killed NER-deficient cells more efficiently than proficient cells. Five drugs were further analyzed for IC50 values, effects on cell cycle distribution, and induction of DNA damage. Ascaridol was the most effe…

The Concept of Religious Pluralism in a Globalized World: An Analytical and Comparative Study of John Hick and Hossein Nasr's Theories
2023
As a researcher and author in the field of comparative religion, I have dedicated my academic journey to the study of philosophy and religion. It is through this pursuit that I have developed a deep passion for expanding my knowledge and understanding of various religious traditions, beliefs, and practices. My academic pursuits have granted me the opportunity to delve into the intricate complexities of different religious systems, exploring their historical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions. I find great fulfillment in unraveling the mysteries and nuances of religious texts, rituals, and the diverse ways in which individuals and communities express their spiritual beliefs. For me, the…
Zwischen romantisierter Liebeserfahrung und authentischer lebenspraktischer Zukunftsorientierung - Ricarda Huchs Briefe an Richard Huch 1887-1897
2019
The following article attempts to characterize the letters of Ricarda Huch to Richard Huch from 1887-1897. The focus is on the idealization and domination of unconventional love as well as the characteristics of an individual suffering from unfulfilled love, seeking despite that to find herself in everyday life. The inner development of the author of the letters has been shown, overcoming her depressing reality thanks to her inner strength and the power of her intellect as well finding herself in the daily routines of life.
Microbial characterisation of fermented meat productions from the Sicilian breed "Suino Nero dei Nebrodi"
2012
Two traditional sausage products (“salsiccia” and “salame”) processed from the raw meat of the Black Sicilian swine “Suino Nero dei Nebrodi” were microbiologically investigated during the manufacturing and ripening stages. Both products were dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), especially rod-shaped types. The concentration of enterococci was consistent in salame. Coagulase-negative cocci increased slower than LAB. Yeasts showed an increasing trend during the ripening of both products. Enterobacteriaceae were counted at a constant level of about 105 CFU/g in both products, while pseudomonads diminished during ripening. Coagulase-positive staphylococci, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmone…
Indigenous Research and Romantic Nationalism
2016
In recent years, “indigenous research” and “indigenous methods” have become prominent themes in the general field of qualitative methodology. These ideas and their implications raise serious questions for the wider conduct of social research. We will outline some of those ideas, subjecting them to scrutiny, and ultimately using them to question the rise of Romanticism in contemporary social methodology. We develop these ideas to question the contemporary emphasis on the personal and the experiential in current methodological commentary.
