Transfers of small analytes in a multiphasic stirred fruit yoghurt model

International audience; The transfer of small analytes in a multiphasic stirred fruit yoghurt model, made of a pectin gel aimed to mimic fruit pieces and of a dairy gel done with milk acidified by glucono-δ-lactone hydrolysis, have been studied. The concentration gradients between the pectin gel and the dairy gel were the driving force for the migration of small analytes (i.e. water, protons and colorants). Water migrated from the dairy to the pectin gel, causing modifications in the water content of both gels and an equilibration of their water activity at 0.938±0.003. Parenthood and gender inequality : Population-based evidence on the child penalty in Finland

This study presents evidence on the effect of parenthood on labor market outcomes in Finland. We use population-based data drawn from administrative registers and an event study design centered around the birth of the first child using the specification proposed in Kleven et al. (2019b). The study confirms that women encounter large short- and long-term child penalties in gross labor earnings and that penalties are associated with employment participation. Taxes and social security transfers considerably reduce the child penalty, which also varies by the number of children. peerReviewed

Selective writing and read-out of a register of static qubits

We propose a setup comprising an arbitrarily large array of static qubits (SQs), which interact with a flying qubit (FQ). The SQs work as a quantum register, which can be written or read-out by means of the FQ through quantum state transfer (QST). The entire system, including the FQ's motional degrees of freedom, behaves quantum mechanically. We demonstrate a strategy allowing for selective QST between the FQ and a single SQ chosen from the register. This is achieved through a perfect mirror located beyond the SQs and suitable modulation of the inter-SQ distances.

Hard Two-Photon Contribution to Elastic Lepton-Proton Scattering Determined by the OLYMPUS Experiment

The OLYMPUS collaboration reports on a precision measurement of the positron-proton to electron-proton elastic cross section ratio, $R_{2\gamma}$, a direct measure of the contribution of hard two-photon exchange to the elastic cross section. In the OLYMPUS measurement, 2.01~GeV electron and positron beams were directed through a hydrogen gas target internal to the DORIS storage ring at DESY. A toroidal magnetic spectrometer instrumented with drift chambers and time-of-flight scintillators detected elastically scattered leptons in coincidence with recoiling protons over a scattering angle range of $\approx 20\degree$ to $80\degree$.
