Modeling risk perception in ATIS context through Fuzzy Logic
2011
Abstract This research is aimed at investigating the effect of accuracy of ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information Systems) in terms of route choices and travellers concordance to informative system. A Stated Preference Experiment has been made by using a Travel Simulator developed at the Technische Universiteit of Delft (The Netherlands). During the experiment respondents have been asked to make repeated route choices in presence of ATIS. Two kinds of information have been tested: descriptive (respondents are provided with the estimated travel times on each route), and prescriptive (respondents are provided with the estimated shortest route). For each kind of information four levels of accura…
Knowledge exchange through science diplomacy to assist disaster risk reduction
2021
Abstract This paper analyses science diplomacy efforts to reduce disaster risks and proposes establishing national knowledge exchange centers (KECs) to help individual states adhere to their Sendai Framework goals. KECs are considered to be interconnected globally and work together to promote resilience efforts by facilitating sharing of information and strategies in risk monitoring, assessment, and ultimately reduction across the globe. KECs can provide high-quality scientific evidence for informed decisionmaking along with a component related to disaster science media to ensure that appropriate knowledge reaches a variety of people who need it in different forms tailored for them. KECs ca…

Robert Foulke, The Sea Voyage Narrative, Routledge, New York and London, 1997, pp. 244, ISBN 0-415-93894-5.
Generation of travelling sine-Gordon breathers in noisy long Josephson junctions
2022
The generation of travelling sine-Gordon breathers is achieved through the nonlinear supratransmission effect in a magnetically driven long Josephson junction, in the presence of losses, a current bias, and a thermal noise source. We demonstrate how to exclusively induce breather modes by means of controlled magnetic pulses. A nonmonotonic behavior of the breather-only generation probability is observed as a function of the noise intensity. An experimental protocol providing evidence of the Josephson breather's existence is proposed.
Gioielli siciliani nelle testimonianze dei viaggiatori inglesi in Sicilia tra XVIII e XIX secolo
2020
The attention that is dedicated to the Decorative Arts in the travelers' diaries is much inferior in comparison to that one turned to the archaeology, to the painting or to the sculpture. As far as jewelry is concerned, in particular, the growing admiration for the craftsman's mastery was flanked by the traditional consideration of its splendor as a status symbol and the ancestral conception of precious stones as bearers of particular magical or apotropaic powers. It is, however, natural that the quotations of jewels in the diaries of the Grand Tour are in small numbers compared, for example, to those relating to archaeological ruins, and their collection is the result of targeted research …
La grandeur & la beauté - Le Arti Decorative siciliane nei diari dei viaggiatori francesi tra XVII e XIX secolo
2021
This volume constitutes the second stage of a research project which, through a detailed study of the accounts of foreign travellers who arrived in Sicily between the 17th and 19th centuries, has identified descriptions of the Sicilian decorative arts seen during their itineraries. After having published the results of the research on the diaries of English travellers in the volume Beauty and Splendour - Le Arti Decorative siciliane nei diari dei viaggiatori inglesi tra XVIII e XIX secolo, the results of the scientific research on the diaries of French travellers are presented here.

An external gaze: the Sicilian cultural heritage photographed by foreign travellers during the second half of 19th century
Since its origin, photography was immediately involved in a lively debate about the relationships that this new technology could have with Art, its production, its exploitation and its conservation: even if it was perceived as a potential threat by someone, several voices emphasized the revolutionary influence that photography could have on the arts. It soon became clear that the new media could also be used for the documentation of events and cultural assets, and thus as a tool for knowledge and safeguarding of the artistic and monumental heritage. Photography will soon inherit the role of nature’s copyist traditionally attributed to engraving but, due to its technological limitations, its…
