Anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities of hydroxytyrosol on different tumour cells: the role of extracellular production of hydrogen peroxide

2011

Several recently published data suggest that the anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic properties of hydroxytyrosol [3,4-dihydroxyphenyl ethanol (3,4-DHPEA)] on HL60 cells may be mediated by the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the culture medium. The aim of this study was to clarify the role played by H2O2 in the chemopreventive activities of 3,4-DHPEA on breast (MDA and MCF-7), prostate (LNCap and PC3) and colon (SW480 and HCT116) cancer cell lines and to investigate the effects of cell culture medium components and the possible mechanisms at the basis of the H2O2-producing properties of 3,4-DHPEA. The proliferation was measured by the MTT assay and the apoptosis by both fluores…

Clinical, radiological and therapeutic features of keratocystic odontogenic tumours: a study over a decade

2014

Factors associated with the potential for recurrence of keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) still remain to be clearly determined and no consensus exists concerning the management of KCOT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different clinical factors associated with KCOT and its treatment methods. A retrospective review was performed of 55 cases treated from 2001 to 2010. Of the 55 cases, 27% were associated with an impacted or semi-impacted tooth. The majority of the lesions (82%) were located in tooth-bearing areas, and the overall mandibular to maxilla ratio of tumour occurrence was 5:1. The treatment options included enucleation, marsupialisation, or peripheral ostectomy, wit…

Fokal-noduläre Hyperplasie der Leber bei 930 Patienten

1987

Analysis of 930 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver (FNH), including 23 seen by the authors, showed the following results: 82.2% of patients were female, 37.8% of these had taken female steroidal hormones. There was no preference for a particular lobe of the liver. 57.7% of FNH were subcapsular, 33.7% were intrahepatic and 8.8% were pedunculated. Average size was 5.9 cm, 80.8% of the patients were asymptomatic. In 93.5% (115 out of 123) a space-occupying lesion in the liver could be demonstrated by sonography. In 13%, second or multiple tumours were missed by sonography. CT without enhancement demonstrated FNH in 90.4% (94 out of 104 patients). A rapid, marked increase in d…

Time to initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with rapidly proliferating early breast cancer

2015

Aim To evaluate the optimal time interval from definitive surgery to commencing chemotherapy in early breast cancer (EBC). Patients and methods The relationship between time to initiation of adjuvant chemotherapy (TTC), calculated in weeks, and disease-free (DFS) or overall survival (OS), was assessed in 921 EBC patients with rapidly proliferating tumours (thymidine labelling index >3% or G3 or Ki67 >20%), randomised in a phase III clinical trial (NCT01031030) to receive chemotherapy with or without anthracyclines (epirubicin → cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil (CMF) versus CMF → epirubicin versus CMF). DFS, OS and 95% confidence intervals (95% confidence interval (CI)) …

Staging of Bladder Cancer

1982

It is well established that the prognosis of cancer patients depends on several factors including: the local extension of the tumour, and the presence of single or multiple tumours; the presence or absence of lymph-node metastases and/or distant metastases; the presence or absence of neoplastic cells in lymphatics or in blood vessels; the histopathological type and architecture; the degree of cellular differentiation; the tumour — host relationship, including the patient’s immunological reactivity.

Efficacy and safety of regorafenib for advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumours after failure of imatinib and sunitinib (GRID): an international, mu…

2013

Contains fulltext : 118365.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Until now, only imatinib and sunitinib have proven clinical benefit in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), but almost all metastatic GIST eventually develop resistance to these agents, resulting in fatal disease progression. We aimed to assess efficacy and safety of regorafenib in patients with metastatic or unresectable GIST progressing after failure of at least imatinib and sunitinib. METHODS: We did this phase 3 trial at 57 hospitals in 17 countries. Patients with histologically confirmed, metastatic or unresectable GIST, with failure of at least previous imatinib and sunitinib were rando…

Der solid pseudopapilläre Pankreastumor (SPT) – eine seltene Raumforderung der Bauchspeicheldrüse

2008

BACKGROUND: In general, the rare SPT is a tumour of low malignancy predominantly affecting young women. The outcome after radical resection is favourable. In exceptional cases the tumour presents as solid pseudopapillary carcinoma (SPC) with typical malignant features and even metastases. Unresectable liver metastases can be treated with RFA, TACE or chemotherapy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the surgical approach, immunohistochemistry and clinical outcome in five female patients (1998 - 2007). RESULTS: The mean age was 16 years (range: 13 - 47 years). For radical tumour removal a pancreato - duodenectomy (n = 3), a distal pancreatectomy (n = 1) and an enucleation (n = 1) were perfo…

The Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: is there a role for somatostatin analogues in the treatment of the gastrinoma?

2018

Purpose: Analyze the role of somatostatin analogues (SSAs) in the treatment of sporadic and MEN1-related gastrinomas, trying to define whether recent trials have changed the landscape of gastrinoma therapy. Methods: We evaluate the rationale of SSA use in the treatment of gastrinomas, summarize the current literature concerning the effect of SSAs on the control of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) and gastrinomas tumor progression and discuss their role in the most recent guidelines. Results: The medical treatment of gastrinoma and related ZES is aimed at controlling acid hypersecretion and tumor progression, in inoperable patients. The use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to control the syn…

Spinal tumours : recommendations of the Polish Society of Spine Surgery, the Polish Society of Oncology, the Polish Society of Neurosurgeons, the Pol…

2023

Abstract Purpose The purpose of these recommendations is to spread the available evidence for evaluating and managing spinal tumours among clinicians who encounter such entities. Methods The recommendations were developed by members of the Development Recommendations Group representing seven stakeholder scientific societies and organizations of specialists involved in various forms of care for patients with spinal tumours in Poland. The recommendations are based on data yielded from systematic reviews of the literature identified through electronic database searches. The strength of the recommendations was graded according to the North American Spine Society’s grades of recommendation for s…
