The human protein Hugl-1 substitutes for Drosophila lethal giant larvae tumour suppressor function in vivo

2004

Drosophila lethal giant larvae: (lgl), discs large (dlg) and scribble (scrib) are tumour suppressor genes acting in a common pathway, whose loss of function leads to disruption of cell polarity and tissue architecture, uncontrolled proliferation and growth of neoplastic lesions. Mammalian homologues of these genes are highly conserved and evidence is emerging concerning their role in cell proliferation control and tumorigenesis in humans. Here we investigate the functional conservation between Drosophila lethal giant larvae and its human homologue Hugl-1(Llgl1). We first show that Hugl-1 is lost in human solid malignancies, supporting its role as a tumour suppressor in humans. Hugl-1 expres…

Transanal endoscopic video-assisted (TEVA) resection of early rectal lesions using a SILS port. A single center experience

2016

AIM: Transanal Endoscopic Video Assisted (TEVA) excision using a Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery SILSTM-Port represents a safe and complete technique to remove benign lesions of the rectum not treatable by endoscopy and malignant rectal lesions at early stage. It is a valid alternative to transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), to conventional transanal surgery and to transabdominal resection. METHODS: In our operating Unit we performed a resection of 8 voluminous adenoma in the rectal ampulla with SILSTM-Port. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was of 51.1 years, the mean BMI was 23. There were not intra or post-operative complications nor conversions to conventional transanal exc…

Struma ovarii. Case report and revision of the literature

2011

Struma ovarii is a rare form of ovarian neoplasm, entirely or predominantly composed of thyroid tissue. This tumour generally has a benign biological behavior, although some cases of malignant transformation have been reported (5-10%). The tumour usually presents as an asymptomatic mature mass that may measure as much as 10 cm in diameter. The presence of ascites is possible (15-20%), and in a few cases the association of ascites and hydrothorax has been recorded (Pseudo-Meigs Syndrome); a close relationship between ascites and high levels of Ca-125, that may wrongly induce to a diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma is present. Other possible clinical consequences are compressive symptoms on adjac…

Giant condylomata (Buschke-Löwenstein tumours): our case load in surgical treatment and review of the current therapies.

2012

BACKGROUND: Buschke-Löwenstein tumour (BLT) or giant condyloma is a verrucous infiltrating lesion, due to a sexually transmitted virus infection, human papilloma virus subtypes 6 and 11. Poor hygiene, promiscuity, chronic irritation and cellular immunocompromised states are often implicated in its genesis. Typical treatment of giant condyloma includes imiquimod cream, podophillin resin, cryotherapy, laser surgery, tangential shave excision with electrocautery. OBJECTIVE: The authors report their case load in the treatment of giant condyloma and the review of the modern therapies. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 27 consecutive patients (18 men, nine women) underwent surgery for giant condylomata of p…

MATURE AND IMMATURE TERATOMA: RESULTS OF THE FIRST PEDIATRIC ITALIAN STUDY ITALIAN

2007

Abstract Teratoma is the most common germ cell tumour in childhood; mature (MT) and immature teratomas (IT) are benign tumours, but if they recur, they can be in some cases malignant. The aim of this paper is to evaluate Italian patients with MT and IT enrolled from 1991 to 2001, in a prospective multicentric study. One hundred and eighty-three patients, observed in 15 Italian Centers of Paediatric Oncology and three Paediatric Surgical Units were enrolled. Clinical data, treatment and results were all analysed. Initial evaluation and subsequent follow up included clinical examination, tumour markers and imaging procedures. Surgical resection was recommended for all the tumours. Histology w…

SURGERY IN PATIENTS WITH TESTICULAR MALIGNANT GERM CELL TUMORS: COMPLIANCE TO SURGICAL GUIDELINES AND RESULTS IN THE ITALIAN COOPERATIVE STUDY

2011

Purpose: Surgery represents a main and often the only treatment in patients with testicular Malignant Germ Cell Tumors (MGCT). We analyzed the compliance to surgical guidelines and the results in a series of patients with testicular MGCT -/+ retroperitoneal node involvement, without distant metastases. Method: 42 patients, observed in 15 Centers were enrolled in the Italian Cooperative Study on MGCT (January2004–December2010). 14/42 were younger than 2 y. of age, 28/42 between 13–18 y. Treatment was delivered according to COG-Staging-System: St.I patients (complete excision with inguinal orchifunicolectomy+decrease of markers, +hemiscrotectomy if scrotal involvement) did not receive further…

Cervico-Facial Actinomycosis: Epidemiological and clinical comments

2008

In a retrospective investigation performed in the department of Surgical Odontostomatology of Palermo University Polyclinic from 1997-2006, the authors examined 12 cases of cervico-facial actinomycosis, taking into consideration age range, gender distribution, predisposing factors and symptoms. In concordance with reports in literature, they found that the disease was perimandibular in 65%, they also report the diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches used in the study
