Eleven strains of halophilic, facultative anaerobes isolated from healthy and diseased Dentex dentex and Sparus aurata (bony fishes) cultured in Spanish Mediterranean fisheries have been studied by a polyphasic approach that included a wide phenotypic characterization, DNA-DNA hybridization and phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA, recA and rpoD gene sequences. All strains were phylogenetically related to Enterovibrio species and Vibrio calviensis. Lactobacillus oeni sp. nov., from wine.

Ten Lactobacillus strains, previously isolated from different Bobal grape wines from the Utiel-Requena Origin Denomination of Spain, were characterized phylogenetically, genotypically and phenotypically. The 16S rRNA genes were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis showed that they form a tight phylogenetic clade that is closely related to reference strains Lactobacillus satsumensis NRIC 0604T, ‘Lactobacillus uvarum’ 8 and Lactobacillus mali DSM 20444T. Five cold-adapted bacteria belonging to the genus Mucilaginibacter were isolated from lichen and soil samples collected from Finnish Lapland and investigated in detail by phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, the novel strains represent three new branches within the genus Mucilaginibacter. The strains were aerobic, chemo-organotrophic, non-motile rods and formed pigmented, smooth, mucoid colonies on solid media. The strains grew between 0 and 33 °C (optimum growth at 25 °C) and at pH 4.5–8.0 (optimum growth at pH 6.0). Novosphingobium lentum sp. nov., a psychrotolerant bacterium from a polychlorophenol bioremediation process

A polychlorophenol-degrading strain, designated MT1T, and three MT1-like strains, MT101, MT103 and MT104, were isolated from a cold (4–8 °C) fluidized-bed process treating chlorophenol-contaminated groundwater in southern Finland. The organisms were Gram-negative, rod-shaped, catalase-positive, non-spore-forming and non-motile. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strains belonged to the α-4 subclass of the Proteobacteria and were members of the genus Novosphingobium. Rapid differentiation and in situ detection of 16 sourdough lactobacillus species by multiplex PCR.

ABSTRACT A two-step multiplex PCR-based method was designed for the rapid detection of 16 species of lactobacilli known to be commonly present in sourdough. The first step of multiplex PCR was developed with a mixture of group-specific primers, while the second step included three multiplex PCR assays with a mixture of species-specific primers. Primers were derived from sequences that specify the 16S rRNA, the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region, and part of the 23S rRNA gene. Polyphyletic Origin of Vibrio vulnificus Biotype 2 as Revealed by Sequence-Based Analysis ▿ †

ABSTRACT A sequence-based analysis of seven housekeeping and virulence-related genes shows that the species Vibrio vulnificus is subdivided into three phylogenetic lineages that do not correspond with the biotypes and that biotype 2 is polyphyletic. These results support the reclassification of biotype 2 as a pathovar that would group the strains with pathogenic potential to develop vibriosis in fish.

Description of Tropicibacter mediterraneus sp. nov. and Tropicibacter litoreus sp. nov.

Four strains (M15∅_3, M17(T), M49 and R37(T)) were isolated from Mediterranean seawater at Malvarrosa beach, Valencia, Spain. Together with an older preserved isolate (strain 2OM6) from cultured oysters at Vinaroz, Castellón, Spain, the strains were thoroughly characterized in a polyphasic study and were placed phylogenetically within the Roseobacter clade in the family Rhodobacteraceae. Twenty-seven new Rhizobium isolates were obtained from root nodules of wild and crop legumes belonging to the genera Vicia, Lathyrus and Pisum from different agroecological areas in central and southern Italy.
