Microscopic features of the tunic in young Styela canopus (Tunicata, Styelidae)

The tunic is a unique tissue in metazoans covering the epidermis of ascidians and other tunicates. The tunic is a multifunctional tissue that provides support, mechanical rigidity, and protection against infection and predation. The outermost surface of it is covered by a thin continuous layer called tunic cuticle. The tunic cuticle density and integrity must be maintained during the growth of the animal after metamorphosis, as it represents the primary body surface barrier preventing the mechanical damage. Using transmission electronic microscopy we attempted to characterize the cuticle morphology of young Styela canopus, a solitary ascidian (Styelidae), in comparison with the cuticle arch…

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (3rd edition)

2016

Seuls les 100 premiers auteurs dont les auteurs INRA ont été entrés dans la notice. La liste complète des auteurs et de leurs affiliations est accessible sur la publication.; International audience; In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues…

A genomic reappraisal of symbiotic function in the aphid/Buchnera symbiosis: reduced transporter sets and variable membrane organisations.

2011

International audience; Buchnera aphidicola is an obligate symbiotic bacterium that sustains the physiology of aphids by complementing their exclusive phloem sap diet. In this study, we reappraised the transport function of different Buchnera strains, from the aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum, Schizaphis graminum, Baizongia pistaciae and Cinara cedri, using the re-annotation of their transmembrane proteins coupled with an exploration of their metabolic networks. Although metabolic analyses revealed high interdependencies between the host and the bacteria, we demonstrate here that transport in Buchnera is assured by low transporter diversity, when compared to free-living bacteria, being mostly bas…
