VO2max Characteristics of Elite Female Soccer Players, 1989–2007

Purpose:To quantify VO2max among female competitive soccer players as a function of performance level, field position, and age. In addition, the evolution of VO2max among world-class players over an 18-y period was quantified.Methods:Female players (N = 199, 22 ± 4 y, 63 ± 6 kg, height 169 ± 6 cm), including an Olympic winning squad, were tested for VO2max at the Norwegian Olympic Training Center between 1989 and 2007.Results:National-team players had 5% higher VO2max than 1st-division players (P = .042, d = 0.4), 13% higher than 2nd-division players (P < .001, d = 1.2), and 9% higher than junior players (P = .005, d = 1.0). Influence of aquatic training on the motor performance of patients with haemophilic arthropathy

Thirteen patients with haemophilia A took part in this study voluntarily. They underwent an aquatic training programme over a 9-week period (27 sessions; three sessions per week; 1 h per session). Their motor performance was assessed by the following cardio-respiratory and mechanical variables before and after the training programme: oxygen uptake (VO(2), mL min(-1)), relative oxygen uptake (rel VO(2), mL min(-1).kg(-1)), carbon dioxide (CO(2), mL min(-1)), respiratory quotient (R), heart rate (bpm) and the distance covered in 12 min (the Cooper test, m). Age affects the metabolic rate of insect brain.

Abstract Brains of adult insects can be isolated and studied vitro. In female blowflies the oxygen uptake of the brain is age dependent. A steady increase is followed by a precipitous decrease around the middle of the life span. These changes are accompanied by alterations of mitochondrial structure and deposits of lipofuscin-like material.

Synthesis, biological evaluation, and molecular docking studies of aldotetronic acid-based LpxC inhibitors

: In order to develop novel inhibitors of the bacterial deacetylase LpxC bearing a substituent to target the UDP binding site of the enzyme, a series of aldotetronic acid-based hydroxamic acids was accessed in chiral pool syntheses starting from 4,6-O-benzylidene-d-glucose and l-arabinitol. The synthesized hydroxamic acids were tested for LpxC inhibitory activity in vitro, revealing benzyl ether 17a ((2S,3S)-4-(benzyloxy)-N,3-dihydroxy-2-[(4-{[4-(morpholinomethyl)phenyl]ethynyl}benzyl)oxy]butanamide) as the most potent LpxC inhibitor.
