The Reshaping of the City-Port Interface in Palermo: A Case of Successful Urban Governance?
2023
In the last decades, various port cities in western countries have developed policies to make shipping activities more compatible with the urban environment and organization. This paper provides a critical interpretation of the process that is leading to the regeneration of the waterfront area of Palermo, the Italian fifth largest city by population. In a first part of the paper the events and economic factors that have negatively impacted on the city-port spatial relations are outlined. Subsequently, in the light of the new governance relations established between the city and port authorities, the strategy and main interventions of the port masterplan that is currently reshaping the city-…
Augmented Cities in Post-pandemic Age
2020
The effects of the Anthropocene are mainly urban, because the cities with their expansion have devoured the natural soil, the identity structures of the cultural palimpsests and the vegetable plots of the cities, invading delicate natural ecosystems, awakening and expanding diseases previously confined and separated in the wild environments. How to get out of the planetary environmental crisis, which is above all an urban habitats’ crisis? The answer, therefore, can only be urban, acting on a rethinking of cities as places of living in balance with other living species, in homeostasis with the planet. Especially in Europe, we must update the idea of cities as privileged places of public hea…
New Inhabitants for the Re-use of Historical Territories in South-Eastern Sicily
2021
In spite of the multifaceted criticalities that characterise the Sicilian territory, South-Eastern Sicily appears to be of particular interest due to the active role that distinguishes it from the rest of the Island. The transformation processes taking place in South-Eastern Sicily, in fact, seem to be guided by new perspectives of sustainability, local development and good governance. The mix obtained from the extraordinary amount of tangible and intangible resources, from some favourable socio-cultural circumstances and from the creation of new transportation infrastructures, has contributed to promoting new forms of reuse of the historical building heritage by Italian and overseas invest…

Palermo Costa Sud: futuri prossimi a coordinata 0,0,0
2015

2022
The Madonie district, one of the 72 pilot areas of the National Strategy for Inner Areas in Italy in the center of Sicily, is composed by 21 municipalities that really have a great potential, due to their historical background and natural landscape, but it needs new strategies to emerge. Many people from northern cities have returned to their home villages in recent years, to live and work, but they have not found some important and necessary services as there are in smart cities, and to date, these villages do not adopt smart strategies. Many changes need to be made, one solution is to transform them into smart villages through rehabilitation, such as improving the historic center with str…
