Contribution of virtual reality to functional rehabilitation
2010
Virtual reality has grown immensely. Practical applications for the use of this technology encompass many fields in both engineering science and human science. In the field of medicine, one of the newest fields to benefit from the advances in VR technology, virtual reality has become a major new therapeutic tool not only in medicine and surgery but also for the treatment of psychological disorders and rehabilitation for impaired person. Our research presented in this thesis aims at developing utilities to aid in functional rehabilitation using virtual reality technology. The main research question of our work concerns the effect of virtual metaphors in learning and training human gestures f…
Training and Deployment as a Basis for Usability Engineering of Mobile Systems
2008
Usability engineering of mobile systems challenges existing methods and raises new concerns. Usability evaluations are frequently described as a separate discipline and in many cases usability evaluations are separate activities within the design and development of systems. This paper presents a development project where training in and the deployment of a mobile system were used to identify usability problems. The project aimed to develop a mobile system to supporting information processes for workers on building sites. An iterative usability evaluation process was conducted the process was refined and validated using two action research projects. The approach of the research was user-cent…
Usability remote evaluation: METBA system
2012
Usability as well as accessibility is a key aspect in development of human-computer interaction. This paper presents the basis of usability evaluation methodology and reviews the methodology used in empirical studies of usability evaluation for disabled people. Finally, we present a solution (METBA) as a system for managing the information related to evaluation of human behavioral observation contents that is used for the registration and management of the information derived from remote usability evaluation which complements the methodology commonly used in this research area.
Filtering usability data with reference to behavior
2011
No company can stay in business without having a "useful" web presence. The question is how usefullnes can be achieved. Usefullnes in this sense is how attractive and useful it is for the visitors. This can be done by observing the visitors' behavior. Doing this through interviews and observation of users in their living rooms is expensive and in many cases even impractical. So, other means need to be found. This paper presents a tool for the evaluation of usefulness of a web presence by extracting and analyzing information out of its log files. The information extraction can be refined using a set of filters which can be arbitrarily combined by the usability engineer responsible for mainta…
A tool to estimate usability of Web 2.0 applications
2009
Nowadays, companies and home users use websites offering services ranging from web sites up to complex web applications. The ergonomics of these applications often remain unconsidered and the applications turn out to be hard to use. In this paper, a tool is presented to facilitate the examination of usability. Web 2.0 applications in particular are supported, because they are more flexible and require other techniques than traditional web applications. The paper explains how to collect, analyze, process and visualize usability data for Web 2.0 applications.
How Can Secure Websites Improve Buying Intention?
2014
A conceptual model is proposed to show 3 effects of augmenting security perceptions (more pleasure, less perceived risk and higher trust) in order to improve buying intention. The role of usability in reinforcing these direct and indirect security effects has also been tested. This study examines the reinforcement of previous relationships in highly usable contexts. To test this, a fictitious website was designed for a nonexistent clothing company directed at the segment of middle class consumers. Two blocks of changes were made to alter website usability: one concerning website speed and the other related to ease of use. Results for a study sample of 170 respondents show that in usable con…

Aesthetic Appeal and Visual Usability in Four Icon Design Eras
2016
Technological artefacts express time periods in their visual design. Due time, visual culture changes and thus affects the design of pictorial representations in technological products, such as icons in user interfaces. Previous research of temporal aspects in human-computer interaction has been focusing on particular interaction situations, but not on the effects of design eras on user experience. The influence of icon design styles of different eras on aesthetic and usability experiences was studied with the method of primed product comparisons. Affective preferences and their processing times were analysed in order to examine visual usability in terms of semantic distance and aesthetic a…
Water quality in forests small retention reservoirs in southern Poland
2018
W pracy przedstawiono analizę jakości wód z terenów trzech nowopowstałych zbiorników małej retencji leśnej (Rudziczka, Niemysłowice I, zbiornik Paciorkowy) zlokalizowanych na terenie Nadleśnictwa Prudnik, w województwie opolskim (południowa Polska). Głównymi funkcjami zbiorników są retencja wody, ochrona przeciwpowodziowa i przeciwpożarowa, funkcje rekreacyjna i ekologiczna. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wykonanych w grudniu 2014 i w maju 2015 roku. Oceny jakości wód dokonano zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami w sprawie oceny jakości wód. Ponadto przedstawiono ocenę eutrofizacji wód oraz walory użytkowe wody zbiorników (analiza przydatności badanej wody do bytowania ryb). Badania wyka…
