Why the share of small amount pensions is so substantial in Latvia?

2018

More than 70% of all old-age pensions in Latvia are smaller than 300 euro, which is close to the monetary value of the at-risk-of-poverty threshold. There is a number of reasons for it: the lack of non-contributory component and inadequately low minimum pensions, the absence of redistribution mechanisms in the mandatory notional defined contribution (pillar I) and funded (pillar II) schemes, an unfair conversion of pre-reform employment record into pension formula, and a high tax burden on pensioners. The authors proposed a package of measures to improve the situation: an introduction of basis pensions, linking minimum pensions to the country average wages, increasing income tax exempt for …

Empathy in children practising judo compared to their non-practicing peers

2019

[EN] Many authors dealing with martial arts and combat sports indicate that this form of activity contributes to limiting aggressive behavior towards other people. Contemporary psychological and pedagogical knowledge explains that empathy is one of the factors that determines a friendly and aggression-free attitude of people towards others. This study we compared the level of empathy between children practicing judo for a minimum of two years and their peers who did not practiced any martial art. Results showed higher levels of empathy in the group of judo practitioners. Judo trainers also agreed that judo participation may improve children’s emotional development (emotional self-regulation…

Revisiting the Salt Lake City Olympic scandal: Would the outcome be different today?

2016

Many international sport organizations face bribery scandals resulting from its event bidding process. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) faced this type of scandal with the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Two members of the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee (SLOC) faced 15 criminal charges from providing more than US$1.2 million in cash and gifts to entice IOC members to support its bid. Ultimately both SLOC members were acquitted of all charges. Can a new interpretation of the United States’ anti-bribery law, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), be effective in preventing similar sport scandals? peerReviewed

What drives future business leaders? How work values and gender shape young adults' entrepreneurial and leadership aspirations

2018

Highlights • Work values strongly predict later entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • The pattern of relationships was similar but not identical for both aspirations. • There is a gender gap in both entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • Gender differences in work values contribute to the gender gap in these aspirations. Abstract Who wants to become a business leader? We investigated whether young adults' work values (i.e., the importance placed on different job characteristics and rewards) predict their entrepreneurial aspirations (i.e., the intention to create a venture) and leadership aspirations (i.e., the intention to become a leader in a business…

What drives future business leaders? How work values and gender shape young adults' entrepreneurial and leadership aspirations

2018

Who wants to become a business leader? We investigated whether young adults' work values (i.e., the importance placed on different job characteristics and rewards) predict their entrepreneurial aspirations (i.e., the intention to create a venture) and leadership aspirations (i.e., the intention to become a leader in a business context). Furthermore, we illuminated whether gender differences in work values contribute to the pervasive gender gap in these aspirations. Analyses in a sample of young adults from Finland (N = 1138) revealed that a higher importance placed on extrinsic rewards and a lower importance placed on security at age 21 predicted higher entrepreneurial and leadership aspira…

Leisure Boating Environmental Footprint: A Study of Leisure Marinas in Palermo, Italy

2022

Ports have played a significant role in the touristic development and further economic growth of Italy. It is the country with the highest number of berths among the nations in the Mediterranean Sea; over time, Italy has created ports with a range of functions. Therefore, it is of vital importance to evaluate the potential pollutants generated from these docks and propose ways to eliminate those problems. A survey that asked about the carbon footprint and the quality of the water in the water footprint calculation was created and distributed to the management of the marinas’ operations. After receiving the completed surveys, the data were analyzed and translated using emission factors into …

Exploring the impact of sustainable value proposition on firm performance

2022

Considering the immense potential of sustainable business models in tackling the broader challenge of corporate sustainability, this paper integrates the literature streams on sustainability practices and organizational business models to analyze the performance implications of a firm's sustainable value proposition. Based on the analysis of a large panel dataset across different industries, consistent with the proposed theory, a sustainable value proposition has been found to have a positive impact on a firm's market-based financial performance (namely, Tobin's Q). Yet, this impact turns out to be highly context-dependent. In particular, the findings reveal that a firm's R&D capabilities i…

On a limiting distribution of singular values of random band matrices

2015

An equation is obtained for the Stieltjes transform of the normalized dis- tribution of singular values of non-symmetric band random matrices in the limit when the band width and rank of the matrix simultaneously tend to infinity. Conditions under which this limit agrees with the quarter-circle law are found. An interesting particular case of lower triangular random matri- ces is also considered and certain properties of the corresponding limiting singular value distribution are given.

Environmental values in industrial marketing relationships

2017

Concern for the natural environment has become an issue that virtually all companies have to address. Literature suggests that an environmentally oriented marketing strategy, such as an environmental brand image, yields competitive advantage for the supplier in the form of improved customer outcomes and financial performance. At the same time, key barriers to environmental purchasing are found to be related to higher perceived cost and lack of environmental interest among purchasing professionals. In addition, research has repeatedly revealed a gap between customers’ environmental values and attitudes and their manifestation in purchasing behavior. This dissertation contributes to the inter…
