An overview of the geochemical characteristics of oceanic carbonatites: New insights from Fuerteventura carbonatites (Canary islands)

The occurrence of carbonatites in oceanic settings is very rare if compared with their continental counterpart, having been reported only in Cape Verde and Canary Islands. This paper provides an overview of the main geochemical characteristics of oceanic carbonatites, around which many debates still exist regarding their petrogenesis. We present new data on trace elements in minerals and whole-rock, together with the first noble gases isotopic study (He, Ne, Ar) in apatite, calcite, and clinopyroxene from Fuerteventura carbonatites (Canary Islands). Abstract Oxygen isotope compositions were measured by ion microprobe in individual micrometer-sized quartz grains extracted from one aerosol sample collected on the Cape Verde Islands and from four surface samples (three soils and one sediment) representing potential source regions of aerosols in Western and Central Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Niger, and Chad). A large range of δ18O values, from +6.2‰ to +39.3‰ is present within the aerosol quartz grains. Abstract In January 2002 the Cape Verde region in tropical West Africa was hit by an exceptionally heavy precipitation event. Rain rates of up to 116 mm (48 h)−1 caused harmful impacts on the local population. The rainfall was triggered by a series of two upper-level disturbances penetrating from the extratropics to the West African coast. The feeding ecology of the Channel flounder, Syacium micrurum, from Cape Verde was studied in November 2003 and April 2004, using frequency of occurrence and percentage by number indices, as well as multivariate analyses. Overall, S. micrurum exhibited a generalist feeding strategy with a relatively broad niche width. Analyses indicated Crustacea (especially Brachyura) and Polychaeta as the dominant prey items, although other items, such as Foraminifera, Caridae or Actinopterigii, were preyed on more often or in larger quantities, depending on the sampling date. Concepts like ecological and environmental citizenship capture the linkage between green politics and theories of citizenship. Although a significant number of contributions to the meaning of ecological/environmental citizenship have been made, their practical implications remain under-theorized.
