Detection of endophytic bacteria in leaves of Vitis vinifera by using fluorescence in situ hybridization

2008

Previous investigation on five cultivars of healthy Sicilian grapevine allowed the isolation of endophytic bacteria belonging to Bacillus genus from different organs (bud, leaf, stalk and shoot). The aim of this work was to use fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments in healthy and damaged leaf tissues of Vitis vinifera to visualize and localize bacteria associated with plant materials. The leaves were cleared to minimize the autofluorescence of the plant fragments. The use of fluorescently labelled bacterial probe Eub338 in FISH experiments on discoloured grapevine leaf disks allowed the estimation of the spatial distribution of different bacterial colonies. At the same time,…

Summer pruning in table grape

2013

This paper reviews cultural practices to improve fruit quality in table grape during vegetative and reproductive seasons. Summer pruning in table grape (Vitis vinifera L.) has more effects than winter pruning, above all with regard to plant productivity and final number of bunches for harvesting. Thinning is one of the most cultural technique and it consists in the elimination of vegetative or reproductive organs in excess. Other summer canopy management techniques include leaf removal, fruit shoots positioning, shoot trimming and girdling.

VERIFICA DELL’ATTECCHIMENTO DEGLI INNESTI-TALEA DI VITE DOPO LA FORZATURA MEDIANTE TECNICHE TERMOGRAFICHE E MECCANICHE

2016

Grafting is an important technique for getting good yields in plant multiplication. Understanding the success of the graft after the incubation room is important to the evaluation of the suitable grafting for the open field (nursery). Successful grafting in vines requires the development of a functional vascular system between the scion and the rootstock. The graft compatibility and its augmentation depend upon various natural factors like environment, weather, soil conditions and protective measures etc. The present study examines the capability of thermography, mechanical and electrical techniques to assess the graft quality and successful of Vitis vinifera after the incubation room. Afte…

Effect of low SO2 postharvest treatment on quality parameters of ‘Italia’ table grape during prolonged cold storage

2018

Table grape is a non-climacteric fruit with a low rate of physiological activity, very sensitive to water loss and fungal infection (Botrytis cinerea) during postharvest handling and cold storage. Gray mold is the most aggressive postharvest disease, because of its ability to develop at low temperatures, for that reason, it is standard practice to fumigate with sulfur dioxide (SO2) immediately after packing. ‘Italia’ table grape boxes were stored at 2°C for 4 months in a storage room with low concentrations of SO2 (0.20%) to extend their postharvest shelf life. Every 15 days, a sample of ‘Italia’ table grapes boxes was moved to 20°C for 3 days for the shelf life simulation. During storage, …

Targeted Drug Delivery in Plants: Enzyme‐Responsive Lignin Nanocarriers for the Curative Treatment of the Worldwide Grapevine Trunk Disease Esca

2019

Abstract Nanocarrier (NC)‐mediated drug delivery is widely researched in medicine but to date has not been used in agriculture. The first curative NC‐based treatment of the worldwide occurring grapevine trunk disease Esca, with more than 2 billion infected plants causing a loss yearly of $1.5 billion, is presented. To date, only repetitive spraying of fungicides is used to reduce chances of infection. This long‐term treatment against Esca uses minimal amounts of fungicide encapsulated in biobased and biodegradable lignin NCs. A single trunk injection of <10 mg fungicide results in curing of an infected plant. Only upon Esca infection, ligninolytic enzymes, secreted by the Esca‐associated fu…

Root hydraulic conductivity in three self-rooted and grafted table grape cultivars

2012

Aim: Root hydraulic conductivity is one of the main factors that control water flow in the soil-plant system and ultimately affect crop irrigation requirements. This work sets out to estimate root water conductivity for three self-rooted or grafted table grape cultivars.

Methods and results: We evaluated root water conductivity of the cultivars ‘Black Magic’, ‘Matilde’ and ‘Victoria’ grafted onto 1103 Paulsen rootstock or self-rooted. Measurements were performed on two-year-old table grapes grown in pots filled with pumice. Root water conductivity wa…

Endophytic Fungi in Asymptomatic Vitis vinifera L. and their Effects on Plasmopara viticola

2016

During a multi-year study on the life cycle of Plasmopara viticola to assess the typical epidemiology of downy mildew on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in west Sicily (Italy), several leaves on which the downy mildew had collapsed were found and observed in a vineyard located in Marsala, in Trapani Province. An antagonistic fungus was isolated from these leaves and named A20; through its morphology, it was identified as a hyphomycete belonging to the genus Acremonium. The antagonism of A20 against the asexual and sexual spores of P. viticola, as well as endophytic nature of the genus Acremonium in V. vinifera were confirmed by further studies which have been carried out over the past decade. In…
