The following paper delves into the complex transfer of humour, focusing on a recurring problem that appears when dubbing comedies: …
Critical Digital Editions of Theatrical Texts: The Example of La estrella de Sevilla
2014
This article analyses the process of creating a multilingual and multimedia critical digital edition of the text from the Spanish Golden Age La Estrella de Sevilla. It begins with a reflection on what a critical digital edition is, and then it presents different projects about digital editions of theatrical texts as well as some practical issues on the encoding of the texts included in this digital critical edition.
Visualization of Jacques Lacan’s Registers of the Psychoanalytic Field, and Discovery of Metaphor and of Metonymy. Analytical Case Study of Edgar All…
2017
International audience; We start with a description of Lacan’s work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and genera…
The Scree Test and the Number of Factors: a Dynamic Graphics Approach
2015
Exploratory Factor Analysis and Principal Component Analysis are two data analysis methods that are commonly used in psychological research. When applying these techniques, it is important to determine how many factors to retain. This decision is sometimes based on a visual inspection of the Scree plot. However, the Scree plot may at times be ambiguous and open to interpretation. This paper aims to explore a number of graphical and computational improvements to the Scree plot in order to make it more valid and informative. These enhancements are based on dynamic and interactive data visualization tools, and range from adding Parallel Analysis results to "linking" the Scree plot with other g…
Are root letters compulsory for lexical access in Semitic languages? The case of masked form-priming in Arabic.
2014
Do Semitic and Indo-European languages differ at a qualitative level? Recently, it has been claimed that lexical space in Semitic languages (e.g., Hebrew, Arabic) is mainly determined by morphological constraints, while lexical space in Indo-European languages is mainly determined by orthographic constraints (Frost, Kugler, Deutsch, & Forster, 2005). One of the key findings supporting the qualitative difference between Semitic and Indo-European languages is the absence of masked form priming in Hebrew/Arabic with productive words. Here we examined whether masked form priming occurs in Arabic words when one of the letters from the productive root is replaced in the prime stimulus by another …

2015
ABSTRACT: This study provides a list of sources and resources available for the study and research of emblem books and other materials produced by emblematic culture (15th-18th centuries), with a special focus on the contributions that have been produced in recent years with the widespread use of the Internet, both in terms of primary and secondary sources, as well as electronic resources (digital libraries, databases, digital editions with text encoding inner markup, search engines, specialized portals, etc.). KEYWORDS: Emblematics, Emblems, Imprese, Devices, Hieroglyphs, Resources for Emblem Studies.
2014
ABSTRACT: Allegorical and emblematic images do not appear exclusively in visual literature: Genres such as the Italian or the Italian-inspired Counter-Reformation oratorios, cantatas and sacred or moral operas often contain images quite similar in form and function to those published in the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth-century European collections of emblems. This article analyses some of these parallelisms in the particular case of Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (c. 1707), by the librettist and patron of the arts Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj and the composer Georg Friedrich Handel. KEYWORDS: Emblem, Opera, Oratorio, Academy, Discourse, Allegory, Rhetoric, Aural, Visual, Pamphilj,…
On the Origins of Spanish Hieroglyphs: Part One
2015
ABSTRACT: In this paper the Spanish reception of hieroglyphs, and its outcome, is presented as an important aspect of the process of transmission of hieroglyphs in Early-Modern Europe. This change of perspective is important because it gives a general context for the phenomenon in Spain, clarifies its ties with the rest of the continent through the process of diffusion and –perhaps more relevantly– highlights the distinct characteristics that hieroglyphs assumed in Spain as response to a different mentality, culminating with the creation of what the author regards as «classic Spanish hieroglyphs». KEYWORDS: Hieroglyph, Emblem, Diffusion, Genre. RESUMEN: En este trabajo, dividido en dos part…
La divisa de las granadas del rey Enrique IV de Castilla y su estela posterior
2015
ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the meaning of the impresa or device of the pomegranates, with the motto « Agro dulce », utilized by Henry IV (1425-1474), of the House of Trastamara, King of Castile from 1454 until his death. By means of a review of vestiges that remain of the device, especially in architectonic elements, I postulate that the pomegranate may have been used as the family impresa of the House of Trastamara and their descendants. This, it seems, can be deduced from the pictura of the device in several personal imprese of relatives who lived in the sixteenth century. KEYWORDS: pomegranate, devices, royal clemency, Henry IV, Catholic Monarchs, Catherine of Aragon, Charles V, Phili…
