PDAs are more and more used as advanced adaptive HEI (human-environment interaction) interfaces, thus enabling their users to easily operate applications remotely running in pervasive computing scenarios. Based on a previous implementation, in this paper we discuss the development of a new set of .NET-compliant Application Programming Interfaces to be used within the Visual Studio IDE. Correction of B-scan distortion for optimum ultrasonic imaging of backwalls with complex geometries

Ultrasound undergoes refraction and reflection at interfaces between media of different acoustic refractive indices. The most common ultrasonic method (pulse-echo) monitors the reflected energy to infer the presence of flaws, whereas the lower amplitude of refracted signals is ignored. When the reflector is orientated normally with respect to the ultrasonic beam, the received echo signal shows the maximum amplitude. The pulse-echo method also relies on monitoring the amplitude of the backwall echo to identify or confirm the presence of defects. This work was developed at the “R-Lab” project, a workshop that was experimentally promoted by the University of Palermo (teachers, students and researchers) during the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12. Workshop participants collected and elaborated analysis and proposals in an interdisciplinary and multi-level way (PhD, degree thesis, co-financed research) with lessons, seminars and applied research. Ustica è un pezzettino di terra nel Mediterraneo. Tutti i suoi numeri sono piccoli, quelli che ne definiscono l’area, il perimetro, l’altitudine, le distanze, gli abitanti; ma questi sono inversamente proporzionali all’importanza della sua storia, quella di una terra emersa, residuo di un esteso apparato vulcanico che vive inabissato sotto il mare. Ustica è collocata a nord-ovest di Palermo da cui dista circa 67 km, così vicina in linea d’aria da far parte della sua area metropolitana, con una superficie che copre poco meno di 9 kmq, e una popolazione, inferiore ai 1500 abitanti.
