2020

Cathodal occipital tDCS is unable to modulate the sound induced flash illusion in migraine

2019

Migraine is a highly disabling disease characterized by recurrent pain. Despite an intensive effort, mechanisms of migraine pathophysiology still represent an unsolved issue. Evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that migraine is characterized by hyperresponsivity or hyperexcitability of sensory cortices, especially the visual cortex. This phenomenon, in turn, may affect multisensory processing. Indeed, migraineurs present with an abnormal, reduced, perception of the Sound-induced Flash Illusion (SiFI), a crossmodal illusion that relies on optimal integration of visual and auditory stimuli by the occipital visual cortex. Decreasing visual cortical excitability with transcrani…

Video display terminal use and dry eye: preventive measures and future perspectives

2022

Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common cause of ocular pain and discomfort. Dry eye disease (DED) stems from a loss-of-tear film homeostasis and is frequently seen in video display terminal (VDT) users. Video display terminal (VDT) use reduces blink rates and increases incomplete blinks, leading to tear film instability and ocular inflammation, promoting DED. Purpose: To assess and evaluate the methods for preventing VDT-associated DED and ocular discomfort. Methods: Studies were found using PubMed and Embase with the search terms: (digital visual terminal* OR computer use OR screen use OR smartphone OR display OR visual display terminal* OR computer vision syndrome OR tablet OR phon…

Color induction via non-opponent lateral interactions in the human retina

1992

Retinal connections causing colors in Benham's top (pattern induced flicker colors, PIFCs) are investigated by psychophysical experiments. PIFCs are still seen when stimuli to different cones are demodulated selectively, indicating the involvement of non-opponent channels. PIFCs also occur on retinal areas next to those affected by modulated stimuli; further, both monochromat and dark-adapted trichromats perceive PIFCs which are achromatic. These additional findings point to horizontal cells as neuronal mediators of modulated excitation leading to PIFCs. The unspecifity of the postulated connection with respect to cone types agrees with anatomic findings of Boycott, B. B., Hopkins, J. M. an…

Electrofunctional features of the tilted disc syndrome.

1986

The ERG, EOG and VEPs of 15 patients with tilted disc syndrome were studied. The ERG showed abnormal amplitudes in about 1/4 of the eyes and the EOG values were pathological in 3 patients. It is probable that the abnormality of the inferior-nasal portion of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium seen in the tilted disc syndrome causes the changes in the ERG and EOG. Pattern VEPs latency was delayed in most patients. This finding is probably due to the poor focusing of the light in the retina.

Visual learning in Drosophila: Application on a roving robot and comparisons

2011

Visual learning is an important aspect of fly life. Flies are able to extract visual cues from objects, like colors, vertical and horizontal distributedness, and others, that can be used for learning to associate a meaning to specific features (i.e. a reward or a punishment). Interesting biological experiments show trained stationary flying flies avoiding flying towards specific visual objects, appearing on the surrounding environment. Wild-type flies effectively learn to avoid those objects but this is not the case for the learning mutant rutabaga defective in the cyclic AMP dependent pathway for plasticity. A bio-inspired architecture has been proposed to model the fly behavior and experi…

Spatio-temporal Contrast Sensitivity in the Cardinal Directions of the Colour Space. A Review

2010

AbstractWe review the psychophysics of the spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity in the cardinal directions of the colour space and their correlation with those neural characteristics of the visual system that limit the ability to perform contrast detection or pattern-resolution tasks. We focus our attention particularly on the influence of luminance level, spatial extent and spatial location of the stimuli - factors that determine the characteristics of the physiological mechanisms underlying detection. Optical factors do obviously play a role, but we will refer to them only briefly. Contrast sensitivity measurements are often used in clinical practice as a method to detect, at their early …

Visual attention while solving the test of understanding graphs in kinematics: an eye-tracking analysis

2019

This study used eye-tracking to capture students' visual attention while taking a test of understanding graphs in kinematics (TUG-K). A total of N = 115 upper-secondary-level students from Germany and Switzerland took the 26-item multiple-choice instrument after learning about kinematics graphs in the regular classroom. Besides choosing the correct alternative among research-based distractors, the students were required to judge their response confidence for each question. The items were presented sequentially on a computer screen equipped with a remote eye tracker, resulting in a set of approx. 3000 paired responses (accuracy and confidence) and about 40 h of eye-movement data (approx. 500…

Generative adversarial networks with bio-inspired primary visual cortex for Industry 4.0

2022

Biologicalization (biological transformation) is an emerging trend in Industry 4.0 affecting digitization of manufacturing and related processes. It brings up the next generation of manufacturing technology and systems that extensively use biological and bio-inspired principles, materials, functions, structures and resources. This research is a contribution to the further convergence of computer and human vision for more robust and accurate automated object recognition and image generation. We present VOneGANs, a novel class of generative adversarial networks (GANs) with the qualitatively updated discriminative component. The new model incorporates a biologically constrained digital primary…
