Cyclic voltammetric analysis of pH-dependent complex formation equilibria in anion coordination chemistry

1995

A procedure to analyze pH-dependent complex formation equilibria from cyclic voltammetry is described. Application to adduct formation equilibria between [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) with different polyammonium receptors is discussed. Extension to the interaction of substrates such as ATP, NAD(+), NADP(+), and carboxylate ions with these receptors by means of competitive interaction with hexacyanoferrate(II) ion is presented.

Anion coordination chemistry in aqueous solution of polyammonium receptors

2006

The behavior of polyamines as receptors of selected families of anions in water is explored. First metallocyanide interaction with saturated polyammonium hosts is analyzed both in solution and in the solid state. The utility of potentiometry, multinuclear NMR, microcalorimetry and cyclic voltammetry to describe solution features of this chemistry is described for selected systems. Sulfate, phosphate, polyphosphate and nucleotide interactions with large polyammonium receptors are then reviewed. Hydrogen bond formation is discussed from a thermodynamic point of view. The influence of the presence of aromatic fragments within the structure on the binding strength is discussed. Factors affectin…

The Role of Planarity versus Nonplanarity in the Electronic Communication of TCAQ-Based Push–Pull Chromophores

2018

Donor-acceptor-substituted alkynes, endowed with 11,11,12,12-tetracyano-9,10-anthraquinodimethane (TCAQ) and N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) units, have been further functionalized by a [2+2] cycloaddition with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) followed by a subsequent retro-electrocyclization to form distorted nonplanar structures with bridging 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-diene (TCBD) units. Comprehensive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies have been carried out to compare the electronic communication in planar (alkyne bridges) and nonplanar (TCBD bridges) TCAQ-based push-pull chromophores. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis absorption measurements confirm the electronic communication be…

Voltammetric Identification of Lead(II) and (IV) in Mediaeval Glazes in Abrasion-Modified Carbon Paste and Polymer Film Electrodes. Application to th…

2000

Direct identification of lead(II) and (IV) in glazed ceramics by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry is described. Characteristic cathodic and anodic profiles are obtained for microsample coatings in Paraloid B72-film electrodes immersed in NaCl and HAc/NaAc media. The electrochemical response of PbO, PbO2 and Pb3O4, and a series of test specimens of glaze is compared with that of microsamples extracted from the glaze of blue and white decorated ceramic produced in Manises (Spain) in the 15th century which have been buried in a damp place. Under abrasive conditions, striping peaks at –0.12 and –0.25 V (vs. SCE) appear for Pb(IV) centers and, at –0.55 and –0.75 V, for Pb(II…

Micro- and nanostructuring of oligo- and polythiophenes in two and three dimensions

2003

Abstract Oligothiophenes bearing methacrylic functionalities were two-dimensional-structured by stamping techniques. The localised monomer was hardened by radical polymerisation in UV light. The structures in micrometre- and nanometre-scale were characterised electrochemically by SECM. An inverse polymer opal with extremely high inner surface and periodicity was obtained by localising the photosensitive oligothiophene within an opal template of SiO 2 beads. Cyclic voltammetry of the oligothiophenes in aprotic solvents was carried out to examine possible electrochemical conversions. A self-assembling technique for lateral and vertical structuring of polythiophenes with pendant sulfonate and …

Minimizing geminate recombination losses in small-molecule-based organic solar cells

2019

Small-molecule-based organic solar cells (OSCs) are a recurrent alternative to polymer-based OSCs. Due to the higher purity and definition of small molecules compared to polymers, the morphological requirements can be more relaxed. Here, we present a series of novel rhodanine-based small-molecule electron donors and blend them with the standard acceptor PC70BM. By performing a target analysis on femtosecond spectroscopy data, we quantify the rates of geminate charge recombination. We are able to reproduce these rates by applying the Marcus–Levich–Jortner equation, using results from quantum chemical calculations. This shows that in a series of differently substituted compounds, one can corr…

Redox active polymers with phenothiazine moieties for nanoscale patterning via conductive scanning force microscopy

2011

Redox active polymers with phenothiazine moieties have been synthesized by Atomic Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). These novel polymers reveal bistable behaviour upon application of a bias potential above the oxidation threshold value. Using conductive Scanning Force Microscopy, two distinguishable conductivity levels were induced on a nanoscale level. These levels were related to a high conducting “On” and a low conducting “Off” state. The “On” state is generated by the oxidation of the phenothiazine side chains to form stable phenothiazine radical cations. The formation and stability of the radical sites was examined by cyclic voltammetry, electron spin resonance and optical spectr…

Identification of Manganese(IV) Centers in Archaeological Glass Using Microsample Coatings Attached to PolymerFilm Electrodes

2001

Identification of MnO2 nodulae in archaeological glass by linear scan and differential pulse voltammetry using abrasive-conditioned microsamples attached to polymer film (Elvacite 2044) electrodes is described. Voltammetric responses for manganese-containing samples parallels to those obtained for β- and γ-MnO2 upon immersion of modified electrodes into NaCl, KCl and acetic/acetate aqueous media. The observed electrochemical response provides information on the open microporous structure of the MnO2 forms and the conditions of their formation during the weathering process of buried glass.

Novel benzofulvenes-based polymers: Characterization and employment in flexible electrochromic devices

2014

Benzofulvenes-based monomers have been synthesized for the first time and have been polymerized by means of electrochemical methods onto different electrodic materials. Morphological investigation has been performed by using SEM; electrical and optical properties have been studied by means of both cyclic voltammetry, optical absorption and spectroelectrochemical techniques. Finally, solid state electrochromic devices have been fabricated. They have displayed high optical contrast.
