Reflections on the human role in AI policy formulations : how do national AI strategies view people?
2022
Abstract Purpose There is no artificial intelligence (AI) without people. People design and develop AI; they modify and use it and they have to reorganize the ways they have carried out tasks in their work and everyday life. National strategies are documents made to describe how different nations foster AI and as human dimensions are such an important aspect of AI, this study sought to investigate major national strategy documents to determine how they view the human role in emerging AI societies. Approach Our method for analyzing the strategies was conceptual analysis since the development of technology is embedded with conceptual ideas of humanity, explicit or implicit, and in addition to…

Mental Content and Content-Based Cognitive Ergonomics
2022
In interacting with technologies, people represent their action and technical artefacts in their minds. The information in their mental representations, i.e., mental contents, explains what people do and why they do it. Therefore, mental contents and its analysis provide a good tool for analyzing several different types of issues in ergonomic. As argumentation is such ergonomic research is grounded on the properties of mental contents one can call this perspective to ergonomics content based cognitive ergonomics. nonPeerReviewed

Critical Experiences During the Implementation of a Self-tracking Technology
2016
Emerging technologies have brought several new ways to track, measure and evaluate own activity. Well-being, nutrition, physical training, mood, and sleep are a few of the various measures that can be self-tracked by different technological solutions. At the same time, people are becoming more interested in themselves and their own well-being, and constant tracking of own activities is getting more and more popular both on individual level as well as in general healthcare. This study examines critical experiences that occur during the implementation phase of the innovation-decision process and their influence to adopting or rejecting a self-tracking technology. The study is qualitative in n…
Erityistä tukea tarvitsevien lasten osallisuuden toteutuminen : tapaustutkimus päiväkotiryhmään integroiduista erityisen tuen lapsista
2015
Tutkielma käsittelee erityistä tukea tarvitsevien lasten osallisuuden toteutumista päiväkotiryhmään integroituna. Kyseessä on laadullinen etnografinen tapaustutkimus, jonka tutkimuskohteena oli kaksi päiväkotiryhmään integroitua erityisen tuen lasta. Heidän yksilölliset tuen tarpeet liittyivät kielen ja CPvamman haasteisiin. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli arvioida aikuisen mahdollisuuksia tukea osallisuutta. Tutkimusaineisto koottiin havainnoimalla päiväkotiryhmän toimintaa keväällä 2014. Etnografisen lähestymistavan mukaisesti, havainnoinnin tueksi haastateltiin kaksi erityislastentarhanopettajaa, koottiin kirjallisia dokumentteja ja valokuvattiin lasten leikkejä. Aineisto on analysoitu sisällöna…
Intercultural customer service encounters : a behavioral study of satisfactory and unsatisfactory service outcomes
2012
Ulkomaalaistaustaisten asukkaiden ja turistien määrä Suomessa on kasvanut huomattavasti viime vuosien aikana. Yritysten resurssien ohjaaminen tämän alati kasvavan ja ostovoimaisen asiakaskunnan tarpeiden huomioimiseen voisi edistää asiakaspalvelualan yritysten liiketoimintaa. Tällä hetkellä on kuitenkin epäselvää miten hyvin ulkomaalaisten asiakkaiden erityistarpeet on huomioitu suomalaisessa asiakaspalvelussa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia asiakastyytyväisyyttä kulttuurienvälisissä asiakaspalvelutilanteissa Suomessa. Kvalitatiivinen tutkimus suoritettiin puoli-strukturoitujen teemahaastatteluiden avulla ja haastateltaviksi valittiin joukko ulkomaalaisia vaihto- ja tutkinto-opiskelijoi…
Loudness Perceptions Influence Feelings of Interpersonal Closeness and Protect Against Detrimental Psychological Effects of Social Exclusion
2022
We propose that perceptions of auditory loudness and interpersonal closeness are bidirectionally related. Across 12 experiments (total N = 2,219; 10 preregistered; with Singaporean, British, U.S. American, and Australian participants), we demonstrated that louder audio made people feel physically (Study 1a) and socially (Study 1b) closer to others, presumably because loudness activates interpersonal closeness-related concepts implicitly (Studies 1c and 1d). This loudness–interpersonal closeness effect was observed across diverse samples (Studies 2a, 3a, and S1), for longer listening intervals (Study 2b), and in natural settings (Studies 3a and 3b). Conversely, individuals made to feel socia…
The Development of Intercultural Relationships at Work: Polish Migrant Workers in Finland
2013
This article offers an interpersonal communication perspective on relational processes in a workplace affected by the international flow of labor migration. We investigate how temporary migrant workers and their foreign colleagues perceive developing interpersonal relationships with each other through an analysis of in-depth interviews with employees of a Finnish recruitment agency and Polish metal workers it has recruited. The recruitment agents talk about their relationships with the recruited Polish workers; the Polish workers also describe their relationships with their Finnish colleagues at the customer company. The context under investigation emerges as rich in relational processes. T…
The Discursive Struggles of the Client–Worker Relationship in the Social Services
2020
This study examines how disability service workers identify the discourses of the client-worker relationships. We studied the clientworker relationship from the perspective of the relational dialectics theory with a focus on relational contradictions and the meanings created within discursive struggles. We analyzed the interview data from 22 social workers using contrapuntal analysis. According to the social workers’ perceptions, two discursive struggles exist in client-worker relationships: i) the struggle of integration, consisting of the contradiction of the ideal and the real and the contradiction of closeness and reservedness and ii) the struggle of certainty, consisting of the contrad…
