Final Reflections: Connectivity, Innovation, Transformation, and Global Challenges

2020

Despite the beginning of the trade war between China and the U.S. in 2018, and despite Huawei’s competitive disadvantages in its globalization process, such as being a latecomer in the market, lack of technological leadership, and liability of foreignness with a negative country of origin image, within 30 years, Huawei managed to become a leading global provider of information and communications technology. Lattemann et al. summarize the discussions in the edited book on Huawei goes Global—with Vol. II studying the question how Huawei overcomes these challenges stemming from the institutional distances between China and the host country they are operating in. The authors show how latest Int…

Transatlantic Trade Wars: The United States and the European Union in Endless Confrontation

2018

Considering two highly interlinked economies of such tremendous size as the United States (US) respectively the European Union (EU), it does not come as a surprise that these circumstances inevitably provide fertile soil for transatlantic trade disputes to thrive. In spite of their decisive contribution to the postwar trade liberalization process, the two giants never quit being protectionist in certain particular domains considered sensitive for one part or the other. Sensitive domains are those in which nations fear competition from abroad, in apprehension of being disruptive to their own economy. Usually sectors that are incapable of withstanding foreign competition, most often agricultu…

Parole chiave: poesia, traduzione, Umberto Saba, Tomàs Garcés   Abstract: The personal relationship between Umberto Saba and Tomàs Garcés began in the early  thirties and stopped just before the Spanish Civil War. This article analyses and edits for  the first time all the letters written by Saba to the Catalan poet that have been preserved  in the archives of f…

The Qualitative Researcher in the Quality of Life Field

2015

In the current society, there is a plurality of perspectives about the knowledge of the world and in that stage there is an expansion of the use of qualitative methods as expression of the contemporary interest in the subject-matters, considering the epistemological relevance acquired by the introduction of the subject’s word as a possibility to construct knowledge. The qualitative researcher is expected to feel personally involved in every step of the research process, because every consideration and decision will have to be based on entirely personal grounds. Thus, in this chapter, we shall look into the importance of the qualitative researcher’s leading role in each phase of the research…

Wole Soyinka: Due Poesie

2008

Optimization of Low-Cost Monitoring Systems for On-Site Earthquake Early-Warning of Critical Infrastructures

2020

In the last years, monitoring systems based on low-cost and miniaturized sensors (MEMS) revealed as a very successful compromise between the availability of data and their quality. Also applications in the field of seismic and structural monitoring have been constantly increasing in term of number and variety of functions. Among these applications, the implementation of systems for earthquake early warning is a cutting-edge topic, mainly for its relevance for the society as millions of peoples in various regions of the world are exposed to high seismic hazard. This paper introduces the optimization of an already established seismic (and structural) monitoring system, that would make it suit…

Stable adducts of nerve agents sarin, soman and cyclosarin with TRIS, TES and related buffer compounds—Characterization by LC-ESI-MS/MS and NMR and i…

2009

Abstract Buffering compounds like TRIS are frequently used in chemical, biochemical and biomedical applications to control pH in solution. One of the prerequisites of a buffer compound, in addition to sufficient buffering capacity and pH stability over time, is its non-reactivity with other constituents of the solution. This is especially important in the field of analytical chemistry where analytes are to be determined quantitatively. Investigating the enzymatic hydrolysis of G-type nerve agents sarin, soman and cyclosarin in buffered solution we have identified stable buffer adducts of TRIS, TES and other buffer compounds with the nerve agents. We identified the molecular structure of the…

Digitisation as a tool to promote transparency between collections: the case of the Baltic amber from the Königsberg collection at the Museum of Comp…

2019

A total of 383 Baltic amber samples, including 43 type specimens, held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), Harvard University, for near a century were found to belong to the classic amber collection from the Albertus-Universität of Königsberg. This discovery was greatly facilitated by the public availability online of digital images produced during a four-year project that digitised the over 30,000 samples from the MCZ’s fossil insect collection. The amber samples were hand carried and reincorporated to the portion of the original Königsberg collection that was saved from World War II, held at the Geowissenschaftliches Museum from the Geowissenschaftliches Zentrum of the Georg-Augus…

Five types of OECD healthcare systems: Empirical results of a deductive classification

2013

This article classifies 30 OECD healthcare systems according to a deductively generated typology by Rothgang and Wendt [1]. This typology distinguishes three core dimensions of the healthcare system: regulation, financing, and service provision, and three types of actors: state, societal, and private actors. We argue that there is a hierarchical relationship between the three dimensions, led by regulation, followed by financing and finally service provision, where the superior dimension restricts the nature of the subordinate dimensions. This hierarchy rule limits the number of theoretically plausible types to ten. To test our argument, we classify 30 OECD healthcare systems, mainly using O…
