The Role of Ambidexterity and Vacillation on Firms' Innovation: an Inter-firm Network Perspective

2014

This article examines the underexplored balancing between exploration and exploitation in inter-firm network dimension by applying an ambidexterity and vacillation behavior and how this impacts on different firm’s innovation performances. We propose reconciliation between exploration and exploitation within a network of inter-firm ties, by matching two specific structural network embeddedness positions that are centrality and structural holes. We observe how a firm reconciles exploitation and exploration in their inter-firm networks by adopting two different behaviors, ambidexterity and vacillation. According to the former a firm statically assumes in the same time a network position charac…

Second European Multi-Disciplinary Conference of National Strategies for Chlamydia Trachomatis and Human Papillomavirus (NSCP Conference) in Berlin, …

2013

There is a need for updated guidance on detection, management and surveillance of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis reporting needs to be mandatory in more European countries to aid collection of data. More widespread Chlamydia screening is needed in many countries as this is the only way to reduce complications. The role of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) screening in a situation where the prevalence of HPV infection has dropped significantly was also discussed in the context of the high cost of screening, the need for a relatively complex infrastructure, particularly in developing countries, and falling vaccination costs. An integrated HPV vaccination …

Plastic adjustments of biparental care behavior across embryonic development under elevated temperature in a marine ectotherm

2021

Abstract Phenotypic plasticity in parental care investment allows organisms to promptly respond to rapid environmental changes by potentially benefiting offspring survival and thus parental fitness. To date, a knowledge gap exists on whether plasticity in parental care behaviors can mediate responses to climate change in marine ectotherms. Here, we assessed the plasticity of parental care investment under elevated temperatures in a gonochoric marine annelid with biparental care, Ophryotrocha labronica, and investigated its role in maintaining the reproductive success of this species in a warming ocean. We measured the time individuals spent carrying out parental care activities across three…

Voennye dejstviȃ v Livonnii v načale XVIII v. v doneseniȃh iz Berlina anglijskogo posla Filippa Plantamura

2019

An important element in current historical research is the analysis of diplomatic relations focusing on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. They show the history of the Polish-Lithuanian state, its internal and foreign policy from a different historical perspective. In 1700, the Great Northern War broke out and changed the political power system in Central and Eastern Europe for the next decades. Diplomats from foreign courts were interested in this war, including Philippe Plantamour, secretary of the British embassy in Berlin. He sent his reports to the British Isles in which he posted information on warfare in Livonia. The aim of the article will be to analyze diplomatic reports that can …

Technology as 'Applied Science': a Serious Misconception that Reinforces Distorted and Impoverished Views of Science

2005

The current consideration of technology as "applied science", this is to say, as something that comes "after" science, justifies the lack of attention paid to technology in science education. In our paper we question this simplistic view of the science-tecnology relationship, historically rooted in the unequal appreciation of intellectual and manual work, and we try to show how the absense of the technological dimension in science education contributes to a naive and distorted view of science which deeply affects the necessary scientific and technological literacy of all citizens. Spanish Fascism as a Political Religion (1931–1941)

2011

This article focuses on the controversial argument that Spanish Fascism, organized in the political party Falange Espanola (FE y de las JONS), can be interpreted as a form of political religion, understood in the sense of Emilio Gentile. The central thesis is that Spanish Fascism was a political religion during the Republican period, that is, from the time of its consolidation during the early 1930s to the beginning of the Civil War. However – and this is the main analytical challenge – it was also one after July 1936, in spite of the fact that the formation of Franco's Movimiento Nacional imposed no small transformations upon it. Even if those transformations were linked to the increasingl…

Conrad and Censorship in Poland

2012

This essay explores the ways in which Conrad's life and letters were inextricably connected with the censorship imposed by three political systems: Tsarist autocracy, Nazi totalitarianism, and Communism. Conrad's oeuvre was itself a “victim” of two regimes of totalitarian censorship and political persecution. In occupied Poland between 1939 and 1945, his writing became a spiritual guide for the young generation, helping them to survive the horrors of the war and occupation. After the war, Conrad was banned by the Polish Communists, and supposedly forgotten. Totalitarian systems, it is argued, regard Conrad's works as dangerous and subversive because of their moral message of respect for hum…

Changes in the Breeding Bird Fauna, Waterbird Populations in Particular, on Lake Engure (Latvia) over the Last 50 Years

2005

The nesting bird fauna (186 species) of Lake Engure and its surroundings has changed considerably over the last 50 years: 18 species have appeared as newcomers (among them 56% of southern, 6% of northern origin), 10 species have ceased nesting (among them 60% of northern, 10% of southern origin). These changes might be explained by global warming. Dramatic changes recorded in all waders can be accounted for by the local habitat loss and a general decline in wider geographic ranges. The Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) population increased from 200 pairs in 1940s to 34,000 pairs in 1986, and then declined to 4,200 pairs in 2002. Nesting duck (all species combined) numbers and their nesti…

From Fantasy to Magic Realism

1998

Much use has been made of the term ‘magic realism’ to refer to texts which introduce an important ‘imaginary’ dimension into ‘realistic’ evocations of the world. The Cuban Alejo Carpentier has also coined the phrase to real maravilloso (marvellous reality) which he applies to a vision characteristic of Central and South America.
