Macroscopic Dynamic Effects of Migrations in Patchy Predator-prey Systems

1997

Abstract Different mechanisms at the behaviourial or physiological levels determine many properties of predator-prey systems at the population level. In this paper, we present a method of obtaining complex predator-prey dynamic models from models at a detailed, behaviourial level of description. We consider a multi-patch predator-prey model, the dynamics of which contains two time-scales: a fast one, associated with migrations between patches, and a slow one, on which interactions, reproduction and mortality occur. We use methods of perturbation theory in order to aggregate the multi-patch system into a reduced system of two differential equations for the total prey and predator populations…

Weighting Elementary Prices in Consumer Price Index Construction Using Spatial Autocorrelation

2013

The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) are used in current economic systems to measure inflation. When constructing CPIs, however, official institutions have systematically overlooked the spatial dimension of elementary prices. Ignoring the fact that prices are collected at geographical locations implicitly implies considering prices as spatially independent, when in fact they are not. To solve this problem, this article proposes to weight basic price data by taking into account the spatial correlation they display. The weighted geometric and arithmetic means suggested generalize and improve the simple geometric and arithmetic means currently in use.

Generalized Symmetry Models for Hypercubic Concordance Tables

2000

Summary Frequency data obtained classifying a sample of 'units' by the same categorical variable repeatedly over 'components', can be arranged in a hypercubic concordance table (h.c.t.). This kind of data naturally arises in a number of different areas such as longitudinal studies, studies using matched and clustered data, item-response analysis, agreement analysis. In spite of the substantial diversity of the mechanisms that can generate them, data arranged in a h.c.t. can all be analyzed via models of symmetry and quasi-symmetry, which exploit the special structure of the h.c.t. The paper extends the definition of such models to any dimension, introducing the class of generalized symmetry…

Iterative Cluster Analysis of Protein Interaction Data

2004

Abstract Motivation: Generation of fast tools of hierarchical clustering to be applied when distances among elements of a set are constrained, causing frequent distance ties, as happens in protein interaction data. Results: We present in this work the program UVCLUSTER, that iteratively explores distance datasets using hierarchical clustering. Once the user selects a group of proteins, UVCLUSTER converts the set of primary distances among them (i.e. the minimum number of steps, or interactions, required to connect two proteins) into secondary distances that measure the strength of the connection between each pair of proteins when the interactions for all the proteins in the group are consid…

Against Metaphysical Structuralism

2020

Abstract Inductive Metaphysics (IM) combines an anti-aprioristic emphasis on an empirical and scientific basis for metaphysics with an insistence on a specifically philosophical abductive theory-building. Since the latter specifically philosophical work is not empirical itself, it may in a liberal sense be called apriori. This paper highlights this apriori dimension within IM by a case study on Structuralism, the view that fundamental reality consists of a network of relations (and properties), which a number of philosophers consider to be suggested by modern physics. Focussing on Dasgupta’s algebraic Generalism, the author argues that Structuralism suffers from a severe entailment problem,…

On Metadata Support for Integrating Evolving Heterogeneous Data Sources

2019

With the emergence of big data technologies, the problem of structure evolution of integrated heterogeneous data sources has become extremely topical due to dynamic and diverse nature of big data. To solve the big data evolution problem, we propose an architecture that allows to store and process structured and unstructured data at different levels of detail, analyze them using OLAP capabilities and semi-automatically manage changes in requirements and data expansion. In this paper, we concentrate on the metadata essential for the operation of the proposed architecture. We propose a metadata model to describe schemata and supplementary properties of data sets extracted from sources and tran…

Sensor Network to Measure Electric Parameters

2010

Present paper covers the design of a sensor network to measure electric parameters taking into consideration that all needed components are available in the market as commercial products. The work is oriented to the integration of these existing devices and to give extra functionalities. The final functionality and the connection among the used components are provided by the software. The present paper gives special consideration to the software structure. The described system becomes a tool to be used for energy efficiency applications

Testing a hierarchical and integrated model of quality in the service sector: functional, relational, and tangible dimensions

2009

Prior research has revealed limitations of the dominant SERVQUAL model of service quality. Some authors have pointed out the SERVQUAL model somewhat neglects the tangible and relational facets of quality in the service sector, and, therefore, there is a need to obtain a comprehensive and adaptable structure of quality for different types of services. Consequently, we propose and test a hierarchical and integrated model of service quality, hypothesising the existence of three second-order dimensions: functional quality (describing the efficiency with which the service core is provided); tangibles (the quality of physical service environment); and relational quality (relational or emotional b…

Wartość informacji w systemie informacyjnym w ocenie jej jakości

2018

The purpose of the article is to determine to what extent and how to evaluate the value of information available in the information system when assessing its quality. Such an evaluation, especially for systems operating on the Internet, is absolutely necessary because of the constant and rapid growth of the information resources available there, bearing the unnecessary economic costs of their poor quality and related to that negative social phenomena. The quality of information is a multidimensional category and requires evaluation of great number of different attributes. Are there among conceptual models for evaluating the quality of information also such that require evaluating the value …
