Anaerobic or facultatively anaerobic bacteria are able to grow in the absence of molecular oxygen by fermentation, anaerobic respiration, anoxygenic photosynthesis, and some other membrane-dependent reactions. Fermentation uses substrate-level phosphorylation for adenosine diphosphate phosphorylation, whereas the other processes rely on the formation of a H + or Na + potential over the membrane and a membrane-potential-driven ATP synthase. Abstract The facultatively anaerobic Escherichia coli is able to grow by aerobic and by anaerobic respiration. Despite the large difference in the amount of free energy that could maximally be conserved from aerobic versus anaerobic respiration, the proton potential and Δg ′ Phos are similar under both conditions. O 2 represses anaerobic respiration, and nitrate represses fumarate respiration. By this the terminal reductases of aerobic and anaerobic respiration are expressed in a way to obtain maximal H + e − ratios and ATP yields. Abstract The effect of changes in cellular energy state on 6[14C]glucose uptake and activity of the phosphoenolpyruvate:glucose phosphotransferase system (PTS) in Brevibacterium flavum RC 115 cells was investigated. Energy generation in cells was varied by adding an inhibitor of cellular respiration (potassium cyanide) and an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation (pentachlorophenol) to the cell culture as well as by changing thiamine concentration in the bacterial growth medium. Some factors affecting an increase in magnetic susceptibility of cement dusts

The aim of the research was to explain reasons of fluctuation in magnetic susceptibility of cement dusts and the consequences for the environment. The research comprised measurements of magnetic susceptibility and Fe content in dusts, and also in raw materials, additives, fuels, mixtures and clinkers used for cement production. The samples were taken in four cement plants located in Opole Province (southern Poland). This paper deals with information on the radioactive waste cementation technology for decommissioning of Salaspils Research Reactor (SRR). Dismantled and segmented radioactive materials were cemented in concrete containers using tritiated water-cement mixture. Valorisation of industrial iron oxide waste to produce magnetic barium hexaferrite

Barium M-type hexagonal ferrite (BaM, BaFe12O19) is an immensely important magnetic material, which we have successfully made from the simple valorisation of Fe-rich industrial waste from steel wire drawing, with addition of BaCO3 and heating in air to 1000 degrees C. The optimum ratio of Fe. Ba (producing 86 wt% BaM) was found to be 11: 1 (non-stoichiometric), and secondary phases of alpha-Fe2O3 (non-magnetic) and ZnFe2O4 (poorly antiferromagnetic) were always present. This material consisted of small submicron platelets. A hard magnetic ferrite was produced with Ms=48.6 A m(2) kg(-1) and H-c=211.5 kA m(-1).
