Risk Map of Cultural Heritage in Urban Waterfront

2008

The project Risk Map of cultural heritage is promoted in Italy by the “Istituto Centrale per il Restauro” of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The project support the Central Administration for the safeguarding of cultural heritage. In Sicily, Region with a special statute, the Risk Map is edited by the “Centro per il Restauro” of the Regional Authority for the cultural heritage. The Regional Risk Map is developed according to the country peculiarities: one of these is the cultural heritage in urban waterfront. The innovative project of the Risk Map of cultural heritage in urban waterfront aims to mitigate the risks in historical contexts and to convert the threats in creative processes of…

Environmental hazard and water quality: the River Platani basin

2007

The River Platani, situated in the western side of Sicily, is one of the greatest rivers of the island. It runs for about 103 Km and the basin extends to about 1,784.9 Km. It rises near Santo Stefano Quisquina (Ag); the river flows to Capo Bianco (Ag) ends in the Mediterranean Sea. The morphology of the basin is predominantly characterized by rises of modest entities with slopes sweet or calanques. In the containing gypsum and carbonatic stony heaps are diffused the karst phenomena. In the Platani basin some mines are located of rock salt and potassium salts; today the mines are closed after a long activity and they interact with the geomorphology of the territory and on the water quality o…

Role of Solvent on Protein-Matrix Coupling in MbCO Embedded in Water-Saccharide Systems: an FTIR study.

2006

Embedding protein in sugar systems of low water content enables one to investigate the protein dynamicstructure function in matrixes whose rigidity is modulated by varying the content of residual water. Accordingly, studying the dynamics and structure thermal evolution of a protein in sugar systems of different hydration constitutes a tool for disentangling solvent rigidity from temperature effects. Furthermore, studies performed using different sugars may give information on how the detailed composition of the surrounding solvent affects the internal protein dynamics and structural evolution. In this work, we compare Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements (300–20 K) on MbCO e…

Entrapment of a linear water pentamer into a uranyl-salophen dimer in the solid state

2019

In the solid state, uranyl-salophen complex 1, decorated with bipyridyl sidearms, self-assembles from moist acetonitrile into dimeric species displaying a confined water pentamer, as observed by X-...

ESTIMATING SOIL PARTICLE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION FOR SICILIAN SOILS

2009

The soil particle-size distribution (PSD) is commonly used for soil classification and for estimating soil behavior. An accurate mathematical representation of the PSD is required to estimate soil hydraulic properties and to compare texture measurements from different classification systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the Haverkamp and Parlange (HP) and Fredlund et al. (F) PSD models to fit 243 measured PSDs from a wide range of 38 005_Bagarello(547)_33 18-11-2009 11:55 Pagina 38 soil textures in Sicily and to test the effect of the number of measured particle diameters on the fitting of the theoretical PSD. For each soil textural class, the best fitting perf…

Impact of Different Washing Conditions on the Release of Ag Species from Textiles

2016

The paper investigates the Ag release from textiles (socks available in shops, cotton and viscose filled with Ag nanoparticles–AgNPs) into a washing solution under different conditions. The released Ag amount depended on various factors, such as test media (chemical composition, temperature and water volume), metal contents, and textile impregnation conditions. Furthermore, it turned out that the textile type and colour were the main parameters affecting the Ag release. The Ag concentration in the washing solution ranged between 0.015 μg/l and 4.44 μg/l (socks) and between 0.61 μg/l and 103 μg/l (AgNPs–filled cotton). The total Ag percentage released into water during one washing varied con…
