Plankton Ecology and Diversity
2010
In this chapter we describe plankton responses induced by fluctuating hydrology and eutrophication process in the semi-arid TDNP wetland. We have followed the planktonic community since 1992, at seasonal and interannual scales, covering as well the spatial heterogeneity of the wetland. The studied planktonic components were bacterioplankton, autotrophic picoplankton, nano and microphytoplankton and zooplankton, including ciliates. Plankton has been studied in terms of species composition (diversity), functional groups, spatial heterogeneity, population dynamics. The present data from this wetland allow us to determine which factors (resources and conditions) are relevant for each group and …
Bienestar Docente durante la Pandemia COVID-19 : La Comparación entre Ecuador y Chile
2021
Seasonal shifts in the diet of lake zooplankton revealed by phospholipid fatty acid analysis
2009
SUMMARY 1. We analysed the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of seston and of the dominant zooplankter, Daphnia longispina, through the open water period in a small, dystrophic lake to investigate seasonal variation in the diet of Daphnia. Phytoplankton, heterotrophic bacteria, green sulphur bacteria and methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) were all present in the water column of the lake, and previous studies have indicated that vertically migrating Daphnia can exploit all these potential food sources. 2. For adult Daphnia, although there was some correspondence between the PLFA profile of Daphnia and the concurrent seston PLFA profile, strongest correlations were between the Daphnia PLF…
A New Method to Reconstruct Quantitative Food Webs and Nutrient Flows from Isotope Tracer Addition Experiments
2020
Understanding how nutrients flow through food webs is central in ecosystem ecology. Tracer addition experiments are powerful tools to reconstruct nutrient flows by adding an isotopically enriched element into an ecosystem and tracking its fate through time. Historically, the design and analysis of tracer studies have varied widely, ranging from descriptive studies to modeling approaches of varying complexity. Increasingly, isotope tracer data are being used to compare ecosystems and analyze experimental manipulations. Currently, a formal statistical framework for analyzing such experiments is lacking, making it impossible to calculate the estimation errors associated with the model fit, the…
Publiczna prywatność w społecznościowym świecie - podejście młodego pokolenia
2018
Upowszechnienie portali społecznościowych sprawiło, że użytkownicy sieci inaczej zaczęli podchodzić do kwestii prywatności: dziś, mając ku temu odpowiednie narzędzia, chętniej udostępniają informacje o sobie i swoim życiu. Niniejszy artykuł opisuje wyniki badania przeprowadzonego w celu opisania podejścia młodych osób do kwestii prywatności w cyfrowych czasach oraz świadomości zagrożeń wynikających z publicznej prezentacji pryw…

Collaborative Mobile Clouds: An Energy Efficient Paradigm for Content Sharing
2018
On the way toward enabling efficient content distribution, reducing energy consumption and prolonging battery life of mobile equipment, an emerging paradigm, i.e., mobile cloud, which is based on content distribution, was proposed. As a mobile platform that is oriented toward content distribution, mobile cloud is also foreseen as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The benefits of using CMC for content distribution or distributed computing from social networking perspectives have been studied earlier. In this article, we first present the concepts of CMC and then discuss the energy-efficiency benefits from the system-level point-of-view as well as open challenges in d…

Marine food web perspective to fisheries-induced evolution
2021
Fisheries exploitation can cause genetic changes in heritable traits of targeted stocks. The direction of selective pressure forced by harvest acts typically in reverse to natural selection and selects for explicit life-histories, usually for younger and smaller spawners with deprived spawning potential. While the consequences that such selection might have on the populational dynamics of a single species are well emphasised, we are just beginning to perceive the variety and severity of its propagating effects within the entire marine food webs and ecosystems. Here, we highlight the potential pathways in which fishing-induced evolution, driven by size-selective fishing, might resonate throu…
