Evaluation of carbamazepine uptake and metabolization by Typha spp., a plant with potential use in phytotreatment

2011

Abstract Phytoremediation technologies such as constructed wetlands have shown higher efficiencies in removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters than conventional wastewater treatment processes, and plants seem to have an important role in the removal of some of those compounds. In this context, a study was conducted to assess tolerance, uptake, and metabolism of the epilepsy drug, carbamazepine, by the macrophyte Typha spp. This evaluation was conducted in hydroponic solutions with 0.5–2.0 mg/L of this pharmaceutical for a maximum period of 21 days. The removal of carbamazepine from nutrient solutions by the plants reached values of 82% of the initial contents. Furthermore, a metabolite (…

NOTE SUI LIMICOLI SVERNANTI NELLE ZONE UMIDE COSTIERE DELLA PROVINCIA DI TRAPANI

2016

Notes on wintering waders in the coastal humid zones of province of Trapani (Sicily). The coastal wetlands of Trapani still are of great national importance for migratory and wintering waders despite the dramatic reduction occurred in the last hundred years. During this research the author carried out surveys in coastal wetlands from Trapani to Mazara del Vallo, in order to estimate qualitative and accurate quantitative values of wintering waders. The census includes four winters, from 2012-13 to 2015-16 and was carried out in the months of December and January. Noteworthy is the wintering for three consecutive years of the Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus, the wintering of Oystercatcher Haem…

The role of Mediterranean wetlands in climate regulation and greenhouse gases exchanges: from carbon biogeochemistry to European water and nature Dir…

2022

Constructed wetlands as nature-based solution for sustainable wastewater management in urban areas: a critical assessment by experimental studies and…

2022

In urban areas, constructed wetland systems (CWS) have been recognized as one of the most valid technologies for sustainable wastewater management. They represent green infrastructure and provide solutions to treatment of wastewaters that cities and peri-urban areas produce in large amount. In particular, CWS offer the advantages of wastewater reuse for parklands irrigation, water storage and peak-flow attenuation, control of stormwater runoff, nutrient cycling and uptake, heavy metals sequestration, removal of organic compounds. In greener cities, these systems have the potential to perform not just hydrological and wastewater treatment functions, but also urban design and ecological aspec…

The role of eutrophication reduction of two small man-made Mediterranean lagoons in the context of a broader remediation system: Effects on water qua…

2013

In order to meet the requirements of the European Union Water Framework Directive for the Albufera de Valencia (AV) Natural Park, in 2009, several areas of free water surface constructed wetlands (FWSCWs) planted with emergent vegetation and two small shallow lagoons planted with submerged macrophytes were created over a 40-ha area formerly occupied by rice fields. This area is currently a reserve known as Tancat de la Pipa. The dual goal of this programme was to improve the quality of the hyper-eutrophicated waters of the AV lagoon, the largest littoral lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, and to restore former lost habitats to increase the biodiversity of the area. The lagoons were mainly fed…

Peat florulas in the Madonie Regional Park (Sicily)

2009

The floristic exploration of the eastern slopes of the Madonie Mountains in Sicily, carried out between 1975 and 1980, resulted in the discovery of several hydromorphic environments characterized by a thick peaty horizon. Locally named “margiu” or “triemula”, depending on the lower or higher depth, they host plant communities characterized by some species of Juncus and Carex together with acidophilous bryophytes including some species of Sphagnum. Their ecology as well as their flora and vegetation have been studied (Petronici et al. 1978). In some localities fossil pollens have also been examined (Bertolani Marchetti et al. 1984). Floristic analyses pointed out some phytogeographical patte…

Wetland Restoration with Hydrophytes: A Review

2021

Restoration cases with hydrophytes (those which develop all their vital functions inside the water or very close to the water surface, e.g., flowering) are less abundant compared to those using emergent plants. Here, I synthesize the latest knowledge in wetland restoration based on revegetation with hydrophytes and stress common challenges and potential solutions. The review mainly focusses on natural wetlands but also includes information about naturalized constructed wetlands, which nowadays are being used not only to improve water quality but also to increase biodiversity. Available publications, peer-reviewed and any public domain, from the last 20 years, were reviewed. Several countrie…
