Design of efficient codes for the AWGN channel based on decomposable binary lattices

1998

This work is concerned with the use of binary decomposable lattice codes over the QAM Gaussian channel. First, we investigate the structure of such class of lattices: we derive consistency conditions for the binary codes appearing in their decomposition and express their nominal coding gain and some bounds for their error coefficient in terms of the parameters of the component codes. Then we describe a general multistage bounded‐distance decoding algorithm with low complexity and we evaluate its performance. Finally, we develop a design example and report the corresponding simulation results; as a reference some comparisons with standard TCM codes are also presented.

MEDLEM database, a data collection on large Elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean and Black seas

2020

The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. This was possibly due to increased public a…

CD36 is involved in lycopene and lutein uptake by adipocytes and adipose tissue cultures

2011

International audience; Scope: Carotenoids are mainly stored in adipose tissue. However, nothing is known regarding the uptake of carotenoids by adipocytes. Thus, our study explored the mechanism by which lycopene and lutein, two major human plasma carotenoids, are transported. Methods and results: CD36 was a putative candidate for this uptake, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with sulfosuccinimidyl oleate, a CD36-specific inhibitor. sulfosuccinimidyl oleate-treated cells showed a significant decrease in both lycopene and lutein uptake as compared to control cells. Their uptake was also decreased by partial inhibition of CD36 expression using siRNA, whereas the overexpression of CD36 in Cos-1 cell…

Ce:YAG-PMMA nanocomposite for white LED

2012

Ce:YAG-PMMA composite was prepared by a melt compounding method. The characterization was performed using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Results showed that Ce:YAG particles are well dispersed in the polymeric matrix. The luminescence properties of the nanocomposite do not show quenching or significant spectral shift indicating that the nanocomposite can be useful for advanced applications such as white LED construction.

Ce:YAG composites for white LED

2015

Composites and luminescent polymers have been recently found to be potential candidates for the development of white LED, lasers and luminescent concentrators for solar cells. Due to its luminescence properties YAG doped with lanthanides ions is a good candidate as light emitting filler. In a recent our work, the preparation of a polymeric nanocomposite containing Ce:YAG nanoparticles using in situ polymerization has been reported [1]. A good dispersion of Ce:YAG nanoparticles has been obtained maintaining them luminescence properties. In addition, an increase of thermal stability and stiffness of PMMA was observed [2]. Then, the preparation of Ce:YAG-PMMA composite has been performed by us…

Polymeric Ce:YAG nanocomposites: synthesis and characterization

2015

These last years, the development of hybrid polymer-inorganic nanocomposites has been attracted much attention. In particular, composites containing lanthanide-doped materials as filler are candidates for the development of light emitting diodes, lasers and solar cells. Polymers such as polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC) and polyurethane (PU) are adequate matrices because their good transmission over the visible spectral range, excellent mechanical properties of plasticity, lightness, easiness of fabrication and low cost of mass production. Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) doped with Ce(III) ions is one of the yellow phosphor used in the major commercial white LED combined with …

Analog joint source-channel Multiple Description coding scheme over AWGN parallel channels

2011

We propose a low complexity analog joint source channel coding Multiple Description (MD) scheme for transmitting the symbols of a Gaussian source across a pair of independent AWGN channels. The outputs of these channels have each a separated receiver, whereas a third receiver has both outputs available. At the transmitter side, a pair of bandwidth-reduction analog mappings are used for joint source-channel coding. The presented scheme has the inherent advantage over digital MD schemes based on separation, that coding and decoding can be performed by using a single-letter (or symbol), a strategy that is very suitable for applications where latency originated by the digital compression and th…

Probabilistic response of nonlinear systems under combined normal and Poisson white noise via path integral method

2011

In this paper the response in terms of probability density function of nonlinear systems under combined normal and Poisson white noise is considered. The problem is handled via a Path Integral Solution (PIS) that may be considered as a step-by-step solution technique in terms of probability density function. A nonlinear system under normal white noise, Poissonian white noise and under the superposition of normal and Poisson white noise is performed through PIS. The spectral counterpart of the PIS, ruling the evolution of the characteristic functions is also derived. It is shown that at the limit when the time step becomes an infinitesimal quantity an equation ruling the evolution of the pro…

Volatile constituents of the aerial parts of white salsify (Tragopogon porrifolius L., Asteraceae).

2010

Tragopogon porrifolius L. grows as a vegetable in southern Italy and all parts of it are edible. In the present study the volatile components of the aerial part are described. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of 38 components in all. On the whole, the volatile fraction was constituted mainly by carbonylic compounds (24.6%), phenols (21.5%) and fatty acids and esters (19.7%). The most abundant compounds were 4-vinyl guaiacol (19.0%), hexadecanoic acid (17.9%), hexahydrofarnesylacetone (15.8%) and hentriacontane (10.7%).
