BETWEEN PROGRESSIVISM AND INSTITUTIONALISM: ALBERT BENEDICT WOLFE ON EUGENICS

2013

Albeit concerned with the biological element in social evolution, Albert B. Wolfe was among the very few economists of the progressive era who openly expressed his concerns about certain implications of eugenic rhetoric for the social science. Specifically, Wolfe questioned the strong hereditary boundaries that more extreme eugenicists suggested about human beings. As I will attempt to show in paper, a careful examination of Wolfe’s writings reveals that his reaction was rooted in the belief that many of the social problems which eugenicists attributed to hereditary limitations, were actually imputable to the influence that the social, economic, and physical environment exercised on the ind…

Mean ergodic composition operators on Banach spaces of holomorphic functions

2016

[EN] Given a symbol cc, i.e., a holomorphic endomorphism of the unit disc, we consider the composition operator C-phi(f) = f circle phi defined on the Banach spaces of holomorphic functions A(D) and H-infinity(D). We obtain different conditions on the symbol phi which characterize when the composition operator is mean ergodic and uniformly mean ergodic in the corresponding spaces. These conditions are related to the asymptotic behavior of the iterates of the symbol. Finally, we deal with some particular case in the setting of weighted Banach spaces of holomorphic functions.

Memoria, disinganno, composizione: Goethe, Kniep e la funzione del disegno durante il viaggio in Sicilia

2018

This article focuses on Goethe’s specific concept of drawing as it appears to the reader through the pages of his Italian journey. A fundamental role is played in this discourse by Christoph Heinrich Kniep, a young German draughtsman who has been recommended to Goethe by his friend, the painter Tischbein, and who accompanied the poet during his trip to Sicily. The key function of Kniep’s linear drawings was to create a visual archive destined to keep memory of his experience for future times, free from picturesque effects and potentially capable to force the recipient’s imagination. The relationship between the two travellers turned into a kind of creative symbiosis as can be seen from Goet…

Mozart e Paisiello: a proposito dell’aria «Mentre ti lascio, o figlia» K. 513

2018

The text of Mozart's scena e aria K. 513 comes from Giovanni Paisiello's "La disfatta di Dario" performed for the first time in Rome in 1776. The article reconstructs the whole tradition of the libretto, written by Carlo Diodati Morbili in Naples in 1756 and set to music by various authors till the end of the century. There is a large body of evidence that Paisiello's "Mentre ti lascio, o cara" reached large popularity thanks to the most famous tenors of the time. The dramaturgical context of the aria is examined in detail, and four different versions are compared (Paisiello, Traetta, Mozart, and Frigel). Mozart's setting is demonstrated to be directly inspired by Paisiello's model.

Lupi e licotoponimi in Sicilia: un confronto interdisciplinare

2019

ABSTRACT. (Wolves and wolf place names in Sicily: an interdisciplinary comparison). Starting from zoological and onomastic aspects, the paper aims at comparing data demonstrating the presence of wolves in Sicily. Apart from the review offered by LA MANTIA & CANNELLA (2008) and the study on Minà Palumbo’s works (GENCHI 2012), further sources prove the presence of wolves in Sicily, in particular in the Madonie area. The integration of these data with those concerning ethno-linguistic and toponymic aspects, even without the support of other scientific works, allows to verify the distribution of this predator in Sicily as well as its presence in Sicilian cultural imagery.

Goethes Italienische Reise in Hebbels römischem Briefwechsel: Italienerfahrung zwischen Epigonalität und Originalität

2020

Neue Frauen oltreoceano

2020

The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…
