Nación, emoción y fantasía. La España melodramática de Ayguals de Izco = Nation, Emotion and Fantasy. Ayguals de Izco's Melodramatic Spain

2017

Choice Feminism and Adult Worker Model in Neoliberal Era. Some Effects of Inclusive Policies

2017

In the last decade, the adult work model has been invoked, both by the EU social reformers and at an international level, to orient their respective policies on feminine work and social inclusion at different levels. Such neoliberal model assumes that feminization of work implies treating women as autonomous individuals free to choose their carrier in the job market or to decide whether to work, to take care of their family or to find time and spaces to conciliate both. In the western legal tradition and policies, the ideological approach of separation between public and private sphere is still dominant, and care has been confined in a private space concealed within the family. At the same …

Borders – transborders – no borders: Problematizing the “figure of the migrant”

Precarious work and social protection: between flexicurity and social pollution

2019

The chapter explores the possibility of changing the way in which any social and legal system guarantees social protections for the weakest workers. To do so it elaborates a unique functional set for classifying all kind of precariat, which it names the ‘un[der]-protected workers’. The issue of the precariat is held as an imbalance in the flexicurity balance, considered akin to pollution in the social environment: so-called social pollution. The proposed method to counterbalance the lack of security/protection and rebalance flexicurity is a ‘(non-wage) Social Security (virtual or) Fake (Pigouvian) Tax’ (the SSFT). The idea is that this device either forces companies to hire through SERs (wh…

Lamella-forming ABC triblock terpolymers are convenient building blocks for the synthesis of soft Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) by crosslinking the B domain that is “sandwiched” between A and C lamellae. Despite thorough synthetic variation of the B fraction to control the geometry of the sandwiched microphase, so far only Janus spheres, cylinders, and sheets have been obtained. In this combined theoretical and experimental work, we show that the blending of polybutadiene homopolymer (hPB) into lamella morphologies of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) triblock terpolymers allows the continuous tuning of the polybutadiene (PB) microphase. We systematically vary …

The radical turn of Portuguese social work during the democratic transition (1974–76)

2019

The transition to democracy in Portugal in the 1970s provides the socio-historical background for this article. It focuses on the period of 1974–76, known as the revolutionary phase, when a series of progressive political programmes, forms of direct democracy, collective mobilisation and widespread grass-roots initiatives emerged in the aftermath of the dictatorial regime. The experiences of Portuguese social workers in the aforementioned revolutionary vanguards will be compared and interpreted by using the radical social work approaches that sprang up in the UK and US at the time. Ten in-depth interviews with social workers involved in radical intervention during the revolutionary phase wi…

Radical Experiences of Portuguese Social Workers in the Vanguard of the 1974 Revolution

2019

This article focuses on the contribution of social workers to the Portuguese democratic transition in the 1970s. Their involvement in urban social mobilizations and in the cooperative movement will offer a perspective on the participation of social workers alongside the Revolutionary process and how they, through engaging with social mobilization, grass-roots initiatives and socio-political activism deployed practices consistent with radical social work frames. It is argued that the Revolution provided the structural conditions for social workers to engage with radical practice and that their intervention constituted a form of agency for socio-political transformation while influencing prof…

Meaningfulness and Meaninglessness of Work in Charles Bukowski

2017

In psychological and managerial literature, the meaning of work boasts a long tradition; in this topic, scholars and researchers have explored sources of meaning and meaningfulness of the working activity in workers' motivations, values, and beliefs. Less attention, however, is given to the function work has in terms of signifier of each individual's personal identity. This article aims at deeply examining the relationship between identity construction and meaning of work, focusing on this theme through the exploration of Charles Bukowski's narrative world. My attention was particularly focused on representations and emotional connotations characterizing the relationship between identity an…
