Psychological Impact in Healthcare Workers During Emergencies: The Italian Experience With COVID-19 First Wave
2022
BackgroundThe COVID-19 outbreak imposed an overwhelming workload as well as emotional burdens on Healthcare workers (HCWs). In May 2020, an online survey was administered to HCWs in Italy to assess the pandemic's psychological impact and to investigate possible predictive factors that led to individual differences.MethodsThe psychological experience was measured based on the prevalence of self-reported feelings during the pandemic, including negative and positive emotional states. We analyzed the relationship between factors of gender, age, geographic region, professional role, and operational unit, and the four-point scale used to rate the frequency of each emotional state experienced by p…

Identidades y representaciones del Trabajo Social.
2005
Influenza vaccination in high-risk groups: a revision of existing guidelines and rationale for an evidence-based preventive strategy.
2016
Summary Influenza, an infectious respiratory disease, is one of the main causes of excess winter deaths (EWDs) in Europe. Annual flu epidemics are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, especially among the elderly, those with underlying health conditions and pregnant women. Health Care Workers (HCWs) are also considered at high risk of both contracting influenza and spreading the virus to vulnerable patients. During the 2014/2015 season, the excess winter mortality rates observed in countries of the northern hemisphere (EuroMOMO network) and in Italy (+13%) were strongly related to the intensity of influenza circulation. Influenza vaccination is the most important public healt…
Migranti e pastoralismo.
2017
Over the past decade, research into the role of migrants in agriculture within global capitalism increased. Several studies analyze the exploitation of migrants in the intensive agricultural system as a negative effect of market price competition. Within the context, this article focuses on a case-study which so far has received little scholarly attention, that of Romanian salaried shepherds in Sardinia (Italy). Historically, being a salaried shepherd represented a common step in the moral career of the local shepherds: the young people started as “salaried”; during the years of training they became experts and earned enough money to become autonomous. At the beginning of the nineties, the …
Back Pain Characteristics in Physical and Office Workers
2018
The aim of our study was to characterize back pain according to the occupation comprising physical and office work. Accordingly questionnaires from 100 physical workers (PW) and 100 office workers (OW) were collected. This dedicated questionnaire included 19 questions, of which 7 concerned demographic, work and stature features and 12 concerned back pain. Collected data showed that lower back pain was more common in PW but cervical pain in OW (p0.001). Most common aetiology of back pain was spinal osteoarthritis, sciatica and scoliosis but of different spread in two groups (p0.001). The history of back pain was most often above 5 years and there were significant differences in frequency,…

Vulnerability to Forced Labour and Trafficking: The case of Romanian women in the agricultural sector in Sicily
2015
This paper focuses on labour and sexual exploitation faced by Romanian female workers employed in the agricultural sector in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2013 and 2014 with Romanian female farm workers in Ragusa, the paper identifies factors that contribute towards their vulnerability to exploitation. By paying specific attention to the experiences of women who are mothers with dependent children, we look at structural factors that increase their vulnerability and consider how this vulnerability ‘forces’ women into situations whereby they effectively accept and/or submit to abuse. We also highlight how European Union (EU) citizenship does not automatically protec…
