Core-shell Zn-doped TiO2-ZnO nanofibers fabricated via a combination of electrospinning and metal-organic chemical vapour deposition
2010
Zn-doped TiO2 nanofibers shelled with ZnO hierarchical nanoarchitectures have been fabricated combining electrospinning of TiO2 (anatase) nanofibers and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of ZnO. The proposed hybrid approach has proven suitable for tailoring both the morphology of the ZnO external shell as well as the crystal structure of the Zn-doped TiO2 core. It has been found that the Zn dopant is incorporated in calcined electrospun nanofibers without any evidence of ZnO aggregates. Effects of different Zn doping levels of Zn-doped TiO2 fibers have been scrutinized and morphological, structural, physico-chemical and optical properties evaluated before and after the hierarc…

The experiment at HASYLAB/DESY was performed within the project I-20200161 EC. The research leading to this result has been supported by the project CALIPSOplus under the Grant Agreement 730872 from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation HORIZON 2020. Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia as the Center of Excellence has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Framework Programme H2020-WIDESPREAD-01–2016-2017-TeamingPhase2 under grant agreement No. 739508, project CAMART2. This work was carried out in part through the use of the INL Advanced Electron Microscopy, Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility. This work (proposal ID 2018–020-022469) was car…
Polyfunctional Tetraaza-Macrocyclic Ligands: Zn(II), Cu(II) Binding and Formation of Hybrid Materials with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes
2017
The binding properties of HL1, HL2, and HL3 ligands toward Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, constituted by tetraaza-macrocyclic rings decorated with pyrimidine pendants, were investigated by means of potentiometric and UV spectrophotometric measurements in aqueous solution, with the objective of using the related HL-M(II) (HL = HL1–HL3; M = Cu, Zn) complexes for the preparation of hybrid MWCNT-HL-M(II) materials based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), through an environmentally friendly noncovalent procedure. As shown by the crystal structure of [Cu(HL1)](ClO4)2, metal coordination takes place in the macrocyclic ring, whereas the pyrimidine residue remains available for attachment onto the s…
Inflammation, genes and zinc in Alzheimer's disease.
2007
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous and progressive neurodegenerative disease which in Western society mainly accounts for clinical dementia. AD has been linked to inflammation and metal biological pathway. Neuro-pathological hallmarks are senile plaques, resulting from the accumulation of several proteins and an inflammatory reaction around deposits of amyloid, a fibrillar protein, Abeta, product of cleavage of a much larger protein, the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid deposition, due to the accumulation of Abeta peptide, is the main pathogenetic mechanism. Inflammation clearly occurs in pathologically vulnerable regions of AD and several i…
Influence of metal ions on thermal aggregation of bovine serum albumin: aggregation kinetics and structural changes
2009
Metal ions are implicated in protein aggregation processes of several neurodegenerative pathologies. In this work the effects of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions on heat-induced structural modifications of bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied, with the aim of delineating the role of these ions in the early stages of proteins aggregation kinetics. A joint application of different techniques was used. The aggregate growth was followed by dynamic light scattering measurements, whereas the conformational changes occurring in the protein structure were monitored by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Both in absence and in presence of metal ions, heating treatment gave rise to b-structures to the detriment of a…
Zinc isotope variations in archeological human teeth (Lapa do Santo, Brazil) reveal dietary transitions in childhood and no contamination from gloves
2020
International audience; Zinc (Zn) isotope ratios of dental enamel are a promising tracer for dietary reconstruction in archeology, but its use is still in its infancy. A recent study demonstrated a high risk of Zn contamination from nitrile, and latex gloves used during chemical sample preparation. Here we assess the potential impact of the use of such gloves during enamel sampling on the Zn isotope composition of teeth from a population of early Holocene hunter gatherers from Lapa do Santo, Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We first examined the amount of Zn and its isotopic composition released from the gloves used in this study by soaking them in weak nitric acid and water. We compared …
Zn(II)-alloferon complexes - Similar sequence, different coordination modes, no antibacterial activity.
2020
Often, in the search for a highly defined scientific phenomenon, a different one becomes apparent. This was also the case of this work, in the scope of which we planned to search for metal-enhanced, novel antibacterial/ antifungal compounds. Instead, we denied the existence of such and revealed the details of the bioinorganic chemistry of Zn(II)-alloferon complexes. Zinc(II) complexes of alloferon 1 and 2, ligands with a sequential difference of one amino acid only, show a substantially different coordination pattern at physiological pH. In the case of Zn(II)-alloferon 1 species, a histamine-like binding mode is observed (N-terminal amine and imidazole of His-1) and the coordination sphere …

Indagini teoriche e sperimentali su dissipatori ad attrito per edifici in acciaio in zona sismica
2017
The present paper presents the results of experimental analyses carried out to study the behaviour of slotted bolted connections (SBC) as friction steel dampers. The devices consist of bolted joints with slotted holes, which can be used in both steel and RC framed structures or, alternatively, into beam-column and column-foundation joints. The most suitable configurations to increase friction are investigated utilizing steel S355J0 plates and class 10.9HV high-strength bolts, under controlled pre-load and considering different types of surface treatment. Experimental tests are carried out making use of a universal testing machine, which allows mak-ing displacement-controlled tests. Once the…
Altered desaturase activities and fatty acid composition in liver microsomes of spontaneously diabetic Wistar BB rat.
1992
We examined the activities of delta 9, delta 6 and delta 5 desaturases and fatty acid composition of liver microsomes in the insulin-dependent spontaneously diabetic adult female Wistar Bio-Breeding (BB) rat. The diabetic BB rats were subcutaneously injected with different doses of protamine zinc insulin in order to be killed in hyper-, normo- or hypo-glycemic states. Desaturase activities, which are partially inhibited by spontaneous diabetes during the normo- and hyper-glycemic periods, were similarly affected by the various insulin treatment; delta 9 desaturase activity being more depressed than the desaturase activities of either delta 6 of delta 5. Insulin treatment with 10 I.U./kg bod…
