This study explores mothers’ experiences of their children’s custody. The empirical data consists of twelve interviews with mothers with a child custody experience. Seven interviews were conducted twice, in years 2004 and 2008. The purpose of the dissertation is three-fold: 1) to clarify the construction of motherhood before and after the custody; 2) to define what kind of support the mothers received after the children had been placed outside home; and 3) to identify promotive and hindering factors for the empowerment of these mothers. Pro gradu–tutkielmani käsittelee jyväskyläläisten itsenäisten äitien käsityksiä chattaamisesta eräällä Internetin chattikanavalla. Käsitteellä itsenäinen äiti tarkoitan äitiä, joka on tutkimuksen tekohetkellä ollut eronneena tai eroamassa lapsen/lastensa isästä. Tutkielmani tarkoitus on kognitiivisen kulttuuritutkimuksen avulla tuoda esiin niitä käsityksiä, joita itsenäisillä äideillä on chattaamisesta; miksi he chattaavat ja millaisia kokemuksia heillä on toiminnastaan. Tänä päivänä yhä useampaa suomalaista lapsiperhettä koskettavat vanhempien epäsäännölliset työajat 24 tuntia vuorokaudessa auki olevan yhteiskunnan vuoksi. Erityisiä haasteita epäsäännölliset työajat ja arjen rytmit aiheuttavat perheille, joissa on vain yksi vanhempi huolehtimassa arjesta ja lapsista. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvailla yksinhuoltajaäitien kokemuksia ja tunteita vanhemmuudesta eron jälkeen. Young women’s contradictory expectations and their perceived capabilities for future work-family reconciliation in Finland

This paper explores young women’s expectations on future work-family reconciliation in Finland, a Nordic country well-known for the promotion of gender equality. Utilising Sen’s capabilities approach, we content-analysed thirty individual interviews to identify differences in women’s expectations and their perceived capabilities in future work and care. The results showed that irrespective of their labour market status and educational attainment, the women’s expectations were contradictory, reflecting a current Finnish gender culture that embraces both the ideal of shared parenthood and the primacy of maternal care. Stepmothers’ constructions and negotiations of belonging

Applying a narrative approach and symbolic interactionist frame of reference, this study examines how Finnish stepmothers in their written narratives construct and negotiate their belonging. Belonging is a relevant concept in this study since it focuses on social interaction and intersubjectivity, and their emotional content. Three types of belonging were identified: (a) restricted belonging, (b) dyadic stepmother–stepchild belonging and (c) the spousal relationship as a focal dyad of belonging.
