Parenting styles of Finnish parents and their associations with parental burnout

Abstract In the present study, we examined what kind of parenting style groups (defined by parental warmth, behavioral control, and psychological control) can be identified among contemporary Finnish mothers and fathers and how these parenting style groups are associated with parents’ symptoms of parental burnout. Gender differences in parenting style groups, and in their associations with parental burnout, were also investigated. The survey data were gathered from 1,471 Finnish parents (91.2% mothers). My dissertation deals with the most important female figures of the Finnish national epic New Kalevala (1849): Aino, Louhi, Lemminkäinen’s mother and Marjatta. The epic was compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore. My reading leans on the intuitive night side of knowledge, which Lönnrot (1832) introduced as a counterpart to the day side of rational knowledge. To illustrate the logic of the night side of knowledge, I analyse Lönnrot as both a collector of oral folklore and a compiler of a work of epic poetry. In 2017, Finnish celebrity Sini Ariell published a blog post titled “F*** this shit” in which she revealed her difficult feelings as a mother of a newborn baby. Attracting attention from Finnish media, the post went viral. Through the empirical analysis of affective reactions to the post on an anonymous online discussion board, we explore how the limits of the public expression of negative maternal feelings are negotiated and maintained, but also challenged. In December 2017, Finnish celebrity Sini Ariell published a blog post revealing the negative feelings she had experienced as the mother of a newborn. The post went viral, sparking moral outrage in Finnish digital media forums. In our affective-discursive analysis, we trace the reactions of disgust that appeared in an online discussion generated by Ariell’s post. Paying attention to how disgust was attached to different bodies, objects, and signs, we identify three main targets of disgust: 1) Ariell herself; 2) public maternal complaint; 3) “perfect mothers” and pronatalism. Pro gradu-tutkielmassani tarkastelen ihanteellisen suomalaisen ihmisen määrittelyä 1920- luvulla. Ennen kaikkea tutkin kuinka äitejä ohjeistettiin kasvattamaan lapsensa. Suomi oli juuri itsenäistynyt ja etsi omaa identiteettiään. Vaikka Suomi tahtoi kiinnittyä moderniin Eurooppaan, pohjaa identiteetille haettiin kuitenkin maaseudulta, sen perinteistä, arvoista ja ihanteista. Lapsista tuli tärkeä valistuksen ja ihanteiden välittämisen kohde matkalla kohti modernia kansakuntaa. Päälähteenäni käytän 1922–1929 vuosien Kotiliesi-lehtiä.
